Jailer 2 Passes Rs 200 Crore Worldwide in Two Days as Overseas Sales Lift Opening

Rajinikanth sequel reaches Rs 209.10 crore after Friday slowdown

Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 reached a reported worldwide gross of Rs 209.10 crore in its first two days, with overseas ticket sales contributing Rs 97 crore, nearly as much as its entire Indian market. The film collected Rs 41.85 crore gross in India on Friday, October 16, 2026, taking its domestic gross to Rs 112.10 crore after its Thursday release.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the sequel crossed the Rs 200 crore worldwide mark despite a fall in Indian collections from its opening day. Friday's domestic gross was about 40.4% below Thursday's Rs 70.25 crore.

The latest reported India net collection stands at Rs 95.30 crore. Gross means ticket revenue including applicable taxes, while net is the amount after those taxes are removed. A crore is 10 million rupees, so the worldwide total represents about Rs 2.09 billion in ticket sales.

Tamil Nadu remains the largest domestic market, but the opening extends well beyond the state. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala together contributed Rs 64.05 crore over two days, exceeding Tamil Nadu's Rs 40 crore.

The next test comes on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. Those collections will show whether the film can draw enough additional viewers to build on its substantial advance bookings and opening rush. Friday brought both fewer screenings and a smaller share of occupied seats, making the weekend important for theatres as well as the film's distributors.

How the opening developed

Jailer 2 entered cinemas on October 15 after a substantial advance sales campaign. India bookings began on October 10, while selected overseas markets opened sales earlier. By October 14, worldwide advance bookings had reportedly crossed Rs 80 crore.

Indian advance sales for the opening day generated about Rs 37 crore from around 18 lakh tickets, equivalent to 1.8 million admissions. Advance bookings are tickets purchased before a screening; their value becomes part of the collection for the relevant screening day.

The main milestones were:

  • October 10: Advance ticket sales opened in India.
  • October 14: Worldwide advance bookings reportedly exceeded Rs 80 crore.
  • October 15: The film opened with Rs 70.25 crore gross in India and Rs 55 crore overseas, reaching Rs 125.25 crore worldwide.
  • October 16: India gross rose to Rs 112.10 crore and overseas collections reached Rs 97 crore, producing a worldwide total of Rs 209.10 crore.
  • October 17 and 18: The first Saturday and Sunday provide the next measure of demand.

The completed opening figures followed Thursday's early ticket sales, when live tracking put India gross at Rs 45.70 crore by 6:03 p.m. and recorded occupancy above 90% in Chennai and Coimbatore. The eventual Thursday gross reached Rs 70.25 crore as the day's screenings were counted.

What changed between Thursday and Friday?

India gross fell by Rs 28.40 crore on Friday, from Rs 70.25 crore to Rs 41.85 crore. The number of reported screenings also declined, from 16,599 on Thursday to 13,157 on Friday, a reduction of 3,442 shows, or about 20.7%.

Occupancy fell from 55.4% to 48.2%, a decline of 7.2 percentage points. Occupancy measures the share of available seats filled. Friday therefore had fewer opportunities to sell tickets and a lower proportion of seats occupied at the screenings that remained.

The two measures help explain the fall in revenue. Collections depend on ticket prices, the size of auditoriums, the number of screenings and how many people attend. Friday's figures show a softer day on both screening volume and seat sales, after Thursday's concentrated opening demand.

Southern states supply most Indian revenue

Tamil Nadu contributed Rs 40 crore to the two day domestic gross, or about 35.7% of India's Rs 112.10 crore total. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana followed with Rs 23 crore, Karnataka supplied Rs 21 crore, and Kerala added Rs 20.05 crore.

The rest of India contributed Rs 8.05 crore. Together, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala accounted for Rs 104.05 crore, approximately 92.8% of domestic gross.

Friday's state figures show Tamil Nadu collecting Rs 16.25 crore, followed by Kerala at Rs 7.35 crore and Karnataka at Rs 6.50 crore. These three markets supplied Rs 30.10 crore, nearly 72% of the day's Indian gross.

Kerala's two day Rs 20.05 crore total was close to Karnataka's Rs 21 crore. That gives the sequel several substantial southern markets alongside its home audience, with each contributing to the total as the opening surge eases.

Overseas audiences contribute nearly half the total

Overseas ticket sales reached Rs 97 crore after two days, accounting for about 46.4% of worldwide gross. India's Rs 112.10 crore supplied the remaining 53.6%.

The overseas total rose from Rs 55 crore on Thursday to Rs 97 crore after Friday, an increase of Rs 42 crore. That was almost identical to Friday's Rs 41.85 crore gross in India. Together, those additions brought the worldwide increase for the second day to Rs 83.85 crore.

The available Day 2 report, dated October 16, 2026, and updated October 17, gives Friday's overseas gross as Rs 40 crore and the cumulative overseas total as Rs 97 crore. Its Friday figure differs from the Rs 42 crore increase implied by the totals above; the supplied material does not reconcile that difference.

The international share helps explain how Jailer 2 moved beyond Rs 200 crore even as Indian collections declined. Almost one rupee in every two collected worldwide came from cinemas outside India. A country by country breakdown of that Rs 97 crore was not given.

The film was also described as screening nationwide in Malaysia on October 17. Its overseas earnings form a substantial part of the opening, rather than a small addition to domestic business.

Tamil leads, while Hindi faces screening limits

The Tamil version earned Rs 43.35 crore net on opening day from 9,326 shows, accounting for about 72.6% of the reported Rs 59.70 crore India net total. Telugu followed with Rs 12.50 crore from 2,792 shows.

Hindi contributed Rs 3.50 crore from 4,371 shows, while Kannada added Rs 35 lakh from 110 shows. The Hindi version had a substantial screening count, but its ticket revenue was much smaller than Tamil's or Telugu's.

Access to major cinemas was also a factor. PVR INOX cinemas in northern India reportedly did not screen the Hindi release amid a dispute over its digital streaming window. That window is the interval between a cinema release and availability on a streaming service.

No statement from PVR INOX, the filmmakers or distributors on the reported dispute is included in the available material.

Friday's running language totals continued to put Tamil first. A live Sacnilk update recorded Rs 19.04 crore net from 5,933 Tamil shows, Rs 5.91 crore from 1,768 Telugu shows and Rs 1.93 crore from 3,538 Hindi shows. Those figures were published while Friday collections were still being counted.

Why the box office totals changed during the day

Sacnilk's live Friday figures rose as more screenings entered the count. An earlier update recorded Rs 17.98 crore net for Day 2 across 8,703 shows, taking the running domestic net total to Rs 77.68 crore. A later update put Friday net at Rs 26.88 crore across 11,239 shows and the cumulative net at Rs 86.58 crore.

The later reported totals used here put India net at Rs 95.30 crore and gross at Rs 112.10 crore. Following a film during its opening days therefore requires attention to both the time of the update and whether a figure is gross or net.

The available report dated October 16 and updated October 17 puts Friday's India net at Rs 35.60 crore across 13,157 shows, taking the two day net total to Rs 95.30 crore. It describes the figures as compiled from various sources and its own tracking and research, warns that they may be approximate or differ substantially from producer figures, and makes no claim about their authenticity. Links to the underlying dated live snapshots or final source data were not supplied, so the sequence of revisions cannot be checked against those records here.

The latest net figure places Jailer 2 Rs 4.70 crore short of Rs 100 crore in India after two days, while its gross has already passed that threshold. The worldwide Rs 209.10 crore figure combines Indian and overseas gross ticket revenue.

Producers receive a share of ticket income after arrangements with theatres and distributors. Production spending, marketing costs and revenue from other rights also affect the eventual financial result.

A bigger opening than Jailer, behind Coolie

Jailer 2 opened with Rs 59.70 crore net in India, compared with around Rs 48.35 crore for the original Jailer in 2023. The increase of Rs 11.35 crore amounts to approximately 23.5%.

Rajinikanth's Coolie, released in 2025, opened at approximately Rs 65 crore net. Jailer 2 was about Rs 5.30 crore, or 8.2%, below that opening. Coolie also reportedly collected Rs 53.50 crore net on its second day, taking its domestic total to Rs 108 crore, compared with Jailer 2's latest reported Rs 95.30 crore.

The sequel's estimated production budget is Rs 240 crore to Rs 300 crore, including cast and crew remuneration. The original Jailer reportedly cost about Rs 200 crore and earned more than Rs 600 crore worldwide over its full cinema run.

Those figures put the sequel's scale in perspective: its reported production cost is 20% to 50% higher than the first film's, while its opening day India net was about 23.5% higher. Its eventual result will depend on collections beyond the opening weekend and the income retained from its various markets and rights.

Muthuvel returns to a larger criminal world

Rajinikanth returns as former jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, who has moved his family and taken a supermarket job near the Kerala and Tamil Nadu border. His attempt at a quiet life gives way to renewed danger involving an ancient artefact and idol smuggling network.

The first half follows Muthuvel working as a driver for local thug Moorthi, played by Namo Narayana. Yogi Babu returns as Vimal, providing comedy alongside the developing criminal plot. The later story introduces the Kalpak criminal family, with SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty among the antagonists.

Vidya Balan plays Kantha, whose confrontation with Rajinikanth's character has drawn comparisons with his clash with Ramya Krishnan's Neelambari in Padayappa. An early critical assessment praised the star entrances, action and humour, while arguing that the film was overstuffed and that at least 40% could have been cut.

Returning performers include Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar and Jaffer Sadiq. Anirudh Ravichander composed the music, Vijay Kartik Kannan handled cinematography and R. Nirmal edited the film. The sequel expands the criminal world around Muthuvel while retaining the family danger and star spectacle that drove the first instalment.
