Rajinikanth sequel draws strong crowds, with Tamil markets setting the pace

Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 was tracking an estimated ₹45.70 crore in India gross ticket sales by 6:03 p.m. IST on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with Chennai and Coimbatore recording occupancy above 90%. The live figures covered 15,041 shows across 3,160 theatres in 1,247 cities, giving the Tamil action sequel a broad opening across India.

Tamil screenings contributed ₹34.07 crore, or 74.5% of the tracked gross. Telugu followed with ₹8.90 crore, while Hindi contributed ₹2.40 crore. Across all languages, the tracking recorded about 2.12 million tickets and 49.8% occupancy, meaning roughly half the seats counted were booked.

Chennai trade analyst Ramesh Bala put early Tamil morning occupancy at 80%, followed by Telugu at 60% and Hindi at 25%. The broader live tracking recorded 46.7% across all languages for its morning slot, from 8 a.m. to 11:59 a.m. Its language totals across the day stood at 64.2% for Tamil, 45.7% for Telugu and 14.1% for Hindi. The measurements cover different groups of screenings and periods.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, the film reunites Rajinikanth with composer Anirudh Ravichander and several returning cast members. Its strongest business was concentrated in southern India, while a dispute over the Hindi version's planned streaming window restricted access to major multiplex chains.

The ₹45.70 crore figure was a live estimate assembled from online information, including ticketing platforms. Final opening day collections and a completed worldwide total were still pending. Forecasts ranged from an India opening near ₹50 crore to worldwide gross earnings around ₹100 crore or ₹125 crore, depending on the market and measure being discussed.

How the opening day figures developed

Jailer 2's running totals rose through the afternoon as more screenings and ticket sales entered the estimates. An early opening day update placed collections at ₹18.71 crore, including ₹15.37 crore from Tamil. By late afternoon, a published update put India net earnings at ₹29.39 crore and gross earnings at ₹34.68 crore across 9,701 shows.

Gross means the full amount collected from ticket sales, including applicable taxes. Net is the amount after those taxes are removed. Neither figure is the producer's final income, because theatres and distributors also receive shares of ticket revenue.

The main checkpoints were:

  • October 14, 10 a.m. IST: India advance sales were estimated at ₹31 crore gross, including seats blocked for bookings.
  • October 15, around 2 p.m.: India net estimates stood between ₹21.19 crore and ₹24.09 crore, with the higher figure covering 8,368 shows.
  • October 15, 5:02 p.m.: A published live update carried ₹29.39 crore net and ₹34.68 crore gross.
  • October 15, 6:03 p.m.: Broader live tracking showed ₹45.70 crore gross across 15,041 shows.

The two estimates around 2 p.m. both cited trade tracking, but used different collection totals. Readers following the film's performance therefore need the time, coverage and gross or net label alongside each amount.

Tamil sales extend far beyond Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu led the state figures with ₹13.81 crore gross, 754,636 tickets and 69.7% occupancy across 3,233 shows. Karnataka followed with ₹10.79 crore, while Kerala contributed ₹8.38 crore. Together, those three states supplied approximately 72.1% of the tracked India gross.

Tamil language screenings had a much larger share, 74.5%, than Tamil Nadu's 30.2% share of India revenue. Language figures count the version watched wherever it plays; state figures count every version shown within that state's borders. Tamil screenings in Karnataka, Kerala and other markets help explain the gap.

Coimbatore recorded 92.6% occupancy and Chennai 91.1%. Chennai's tracked gross reached ₹5.36 crore from 301,745 tickets across 1,062 shows. Other Tamil Nadu centres also registered strong attendance, including Trichy at 85.9%, Vellore at 72% and Salem at 71.5%.

Bengaluru leads city revenue as Kerala fills seats

Bengaluru supplied the largest tracked city gross, ₹9.50 crore, representing 20.8% of the India total. Its 171,335 tickets across 1,022 shows produced 58.7% occupancy. Chennai sold more tickets and filled a higher proportion of seats, while Bengaluru generated more money.

Ticket prices, auditorium sizes and the mix of screenings affect the relationship between attendance and revenue. A city can fill a larger share of seats without collecting the largest amount. The Bengaluru and Chennai figures show why both measures matter when judging an opening.

Kochi recorded 80.8% occupancy across 350 shows, with ₹1.62 crore gross. Elsewhere in Kerala, Kozhikode reached 77%, Trivandrum 67.7% and Thrissur 63.7%. Kerala's statewide occupancy was 64.7% across 2,897 shows, making it a substantial contributor rather than a market dependent on a single city.

Trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai also described strong early business from Kerala and the United States. Overseas advance sales were estimated above ₹25 crore before release, with North America, particularly the US, identified as a leading international market.

Telugu demand is the next major test

The Telugu version accounted for 19.5% of the tracked India gross, earning ₹8.90 crore from 469,607 tickets across 2,799 shows. Its 45.7% occupancy placed it behind Tamil but well ahead of Hindi. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh together contributed roughly one fifth of the state based India revenue.

Hyderabad recorded ₹3.77 crore gross and 51.9% occupancy. Vizag reached 61.5%, while Vijayawada stood at 54.3%. Those city figures show stronger pockets of demand within a Telugu market that had attracted concern before release because advance sales were moving more slowly than in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

Ramesh Bala, the trade analyst who projected a worldwide opening around ₹125 crore, said stronger Telugu ticket sales could lift the film further. His forecast linked the upper end of its opening prospects to business beyond the core Tamil audience.

"If the Telugu sales pick up, the film is likely to rake in Rs 150 crore and beat Coolie's record," he said.

Coolie's cited worldwide opening benchmark was ₹151.10 crore. Jailer 2 would need to exceed that amount to take the record.

A streaming dispute limits the Hindi release

The Hindi version earned an estimated ₹2.40 crore gross across 4,072 shows in the evening tracking, with 14.1% occupancy. Tamil had nearly twice as many screenings, yet generated more than 14 times the Hindi gross. The gap reflects the scale of the film's dependence on its original language audience.

PVR INOX and Cinepolis were reported to be withholding the Hindi dubbed version because its planned gap between theatrical release and streaming was four weeks. The chains sought eight weeks. This gap is often called the theatrical window: the period during which cinemas have the film before it becomes available to watch at home through a streaming service.

The disagreement left the Hindi version relying heavily on cinemas outside those multiplex chains, including theatres with a single screen. For Hindi audiences, the practical effect was fewer opportunities to watch the film at major multiplex venues.

PVR INOX and Cinepolis still appeared in the film's combined India tracking, contributing ₹9.86 crore across 2,166 shows. That figure covers screenings across languages; the reported restriction concerned Hindi. Bala argued that wider Hindi multiplex access would be necessary for a serious attempt at ₹1,000 crore worldwide over the film's full theatrical run.

Advance bookings support the days after release

Before release, opening day advance sales in India were estimated at ₹30.90 crore from 14.47 lakh tickets, or about 1.45 million. Advance sales across several upcoming dates totalled ₹57.30 crore from 29.69 lakh tickets. The larger amount included business for later days, while the ₹30.90 crore figure covered the opening day.

The opening day advance figure exceeded Annaatthe's cited ₹23.25 crore by ₹7.65 crore, about 33%. It remained below Coolie's ₹46.36 crore. In Tamil Nadu, advance sales were put at ₹10 crore, with Chennai contributing ₹4.80 crore and more than 500 of the state's 3,300-plus shows already full.

Early booking estimates included ₹7.88 crore for Friday, October 16, ₹7.59 crore for Saturday, ₹7.08 crore for Sunday and ₹2.88 crore for Monday. Tuesday, October 20, was identified as the Dussehra holiday, offering another date that distributors and cinemas would watch after the opening weekend.

A later Friday booking update, at 6:07 p.m. on October 15, placed advance gross at ₹15.36 crore from 796,362 tickets across 11,786 shows. Another panel labelled for October 16 carried ₹40.22 crore with an earlier timestamp and an opening day description, leaving the coverage of that larger figure unclear.

Which opening record is within reach?

Jailer 2's strongest forecasts placed its worldwide opening near ₹125 crore, combining India and overseas business. Another projection put it closer to ₹100 crore. The early expectation of more than ₹80 crore used no clear geographic label, while an India focused forecast targeted ₹50 crore. Geography and accounting matter as much as the headline number.

A worldwide gross of ₹125 crore would place the film ₹25.60 crore above the cited ₹99.40 crore opening of The Greatest of All Time. It would remain ₹17 crore below Leo's ₹142 crore and ₹26.10 crore below Coolie's ₹151.10 crore. On those benchmarks, ₹125 crore would put Jailer 2 third among the Tamil openings listed.

Bala described ₹125 crore as his central expectation, with the possibility of more if ticket sales strengthened. Advance bookings around ₹35 crore in India and ₹25 crore overseas formed part of his calculation before release, followed by anticipated sales at cinemas on the day.

The reported production budget exceeded ₹240 crore. Ticket gross and production cost describe different parts of the business: producers receive only a share of cinema revenue and can also earn money from streaming, television and other rights. A large opening is the first stage of that financial picture.

Returning characters, new opponents and an editing complaint

Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, whose family life and dangerous past drove the 2023 Jailer. The first film followed his search for his missing son, Arjun, through a criminal network. The sequel brings fresh adversaries while retaining Nelson's mix of action and dark humour.

Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik return. New cast members include S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff return in special appearances, joined by Hrithik Roshan. Vijay Sethupathi was also described as making a cameo.

Roshan's appearance reunites him with Rajinikanth about 40 years after Bhagwan Dada, released in 1986, when Roshan was a child actor. Early audience reactions praised Rajinikanth's entrance, comedy and interval sequence, although some viewers were less satisfied with the second half and climax.

Mohanlal's costume designer, Jishad Shamsudeen, raised a specific complaint about the editing. In a social media statement, he said three distinct looks created for Mohanlal had been removed, along with a moment used in the trailer.

But with the film's release, three of Mohanlal Sir's distinct looks were cut entirely, and even that trailer scene was trimmed out (sic).

Mohanlal plays Mathew, an ally of Rajinikanth's character. Shamsudeen's complaint added a dispute over the finished film to a release day otherwise dominated by ticket sales and fan celebrations. The next business checkpoints were the completed Thursday totals, Friday's bookings and attendance through the weekend.
