Two perfect SAT sections and a third language achievement
Nguyễn Mạnh Cường, a student in class 12C6 at Phan Bội Châu High School for the Gifted in Vietnam's Nghệ An province, has earned a perfect 1600 on the SAT, scoring 800 in Reading and Writing and another 800 in Math. His result accompanies an IELTS score of 8.0, achieved in August, and third prize in the provincial Russian language competition for gifted students.

The achievements mark a strong opening semester of grade 12 for a student whose main classroom language specialism is Russian. During his three years of high school, Cường says he devoted most of his study time to Russian while continuing to develop his English at home.
Cường, describing his reaction to the SAT result, credited sustained effort alongside perseverance and luck:
When I saw the perfect SAT score, I was incredibly surprised and everything felt overwhelming. I think this result is a combination of luck, perseverance, and my hard work throughout my three years of high school,
His experience brings together several kinds of learning: English proficiency, mathematical reasoning, reading across different subjects and the study of another language with a different writing system. The results also leave him with a choice about his next step. He is considering both study abroad and university in Vietnam, with a preference for a field connected to foreign languages.
What the three results measure
Cường reached the maximum score in both SAT sections. Each contributed 800 points, or half of his total of 1600. The SAT is a standardized examination used by many universities when considering applicants, allowing them to assess academic skills through a common test.
Reading and Writing involves understanding written material and using language effectively. Math assesses mathematical knowledge and problem solving. Cường's two scores show that his performance reached the test's ceiling in each area, rather than a particularly strong result in one section compensating for a lower result in the other.
IELTS serves a different purpose: it assesses English language proficiency. Cường's score of 8.0 therefore sits alongside his SAT result as a separate achievement. His provincial prize adds recognition in Russian, the language he chose as his school specialism.
The sequence of his studies and results is:
- At the start of high school, Cường made the specialized Russian class his first admission choice.
- Throughout three years of high school, he concentrated on Russian in class while maintaining his English outside school.
- In August, he achieved an IELTS score of 8.0.
- During the first semester of grade 12, his achievements included a perfect SAT score and third prize in the provincial Russian competition.
Why Russian was his first choice
Cường chose Russian because he wanted a closer understanding of Russian culture. Despite his strong English skills, he made the specialized Russian class his first choice when applying to high school.
Cường, explaining the reason for that decision, said:
From the beginning, I wanted to learn Russian so that I could experience the culture of this country more deeply,
His interest in languages begins with curiosity about other countries and new knowledge. Learning a language gives him a way to explore those interests through what people write, say and create, rather than relying entirely on translations.
Russian also presented difficulties. Cường had to become familiar with a new language and a different writing system while continuing his other schoolwork. Most of his language study time went toward Russian, making the continued development of his English a task that required its own place in his routine.
How he divided English and Russian study
Cường organized the two languages around different settings: Russian at school and English at home. He described concentration as central to making that arrangement work, alongside a clear separation between studying and resting.
Cường, discussing how he managed the workload, said:
In class, I concentrate entirely on Russian, and at home I improve my English. By clearly separating study time and rest time, I find I can absorb knowledge without getting tired,
His account gives a practical picture of maintaining two languages with different demands. Russian received focused attention during lessons, while English remained part of his life outside the classroom. Rest had a defined place in the schedule, too.
Cường's routine allowed him to keep developing a language in which he was already strong while spending most of his school study time on another. His English results emerged alongside that commitment to Russian, rather than after setting Russian aside to concentrate exclusively on English examinations.
Books, music and mistakes shaped his learning
Cường used books, music and videos in both English and Russian to build vocabulary and strengthen his grasp of grammar. Those activities brought the languages into his reading and listening beyond formal lessons.
Books gave him sustained contact with written language. Music and videos added listening material. Across those formats, he encountered words and grammar as parts of sentences and conversations, connecting what he studied with language being used.
Mistakes were another part of his approach. Cường said he regarded errors as valuable lessons and tried to learn from them so that he would avoid repeating the same ones. His description places correction within the learning process: notice a mistake, understand it and use that understanding the next time.
His classmates describe him as sociable and willing to help friends. That picture adds a classroom dimension to a story dominated by individual scores. Alongside his own studies, he was known among peers for taking an active role in helping others.
Why SAT preparation went beyond translation
Cường prepared for the SAT by reading extensively, including books and newspapers. He said a foundation in English was necessary, but students also needed to reason about what they read.
Cường, explaining the demands of the reading material, said:
Especially in the Reading Comprehension section, it's not simply about being able to translate; the test also assesses the test-taker's thinking skills. The SAT test requires test-takers to apply their reading comprehension and critical thinking abilities to process content from various fields such as mathematics, literature, geography, history, etc., not just knowledge of English,
Critical thinking here means working out what a passage is saying and using the information it contains to reach a reasoned answer. A reader may understand the individual words yet still need to identify the main argument, connect details or decide which conclusion the text supports.
Reading across subjects suited that task. Cường described encountering material from mathematics, literature, geography and history, so his preparation extended beyond vocabulary and grammar exercises. Books and newspapers gave him practice moving between topics and following unfamiliar ideas in English.
University plans remain open
Cường's immediate priority is to complete the high school program at Phan Bội Châu High School for the Gifted. He hopes to use his achievements as a starting point for further learning and personal development.
For university, he is considering applying abroad or seeking admission to an institution in Vietnam. He wants to pursue a subject related to foreign languages. No particular university, destination, degree program or application deadline has been announced.
His choice will follow a school career in which English and Russian have developed together. The SAT result adds a perfect academic test score to that record, while his IELTS score and provincial Russian prize reflect the language interests he intends to carry into higher education.
