Higher profit from lower revenue
Hyundai Motor Company reported third quarter operating profit of 2.6772 trillion won, up 5.5% from a year earlier, even as revenue fell 3.4% to 45.1102 trillion won. Favorable exchange rates and a more profitable mix of vehicle sales, including expanded hybrid sales, helped the company protect earnings during a quarter disrupted by fewer operating days and production interruptions at domestic plants.

The improvement came alongside a more cautious business outlook. Hyundai lowered its 2026 global vehicle sales target from 4.16 million to 4 million, reduced its operating margin forecast and trimmed planned investment by 1.8 trillion won. The company said the guidance update reflected changes in the business environment.
Net income moved in the opposite direction from operating profit, falling 24.2% to 1.9317 trillion won. Across the first nine months, operating profit also remained below the previous year's level, showing that the quarterly increase came within a weaker period for earnings.
The central issue is how much profit Hyundai can keep from each vehicle it sells. During the third quarter, currency movements and the types of vehicles sold helped offset lower sales volume. Its revised annual targets nevertheless point to lower expected vehicle sales, profitability and investment than management planned at the start of the year.
What improved inside the quarter?
Hyundai's operating margin reached about 5.9%, compared with about 5.4% a year earlier. Operating margin measures the share of revenue left as operating profit after the costs of running the business. At 5.9%, Hyundai generated roughly 5.9 won in operating profit for every 100 won of revenue.
The increase of about 0.5 percentage point explains how operating profit could rise while revenue declined. Hyundai earned a larger operating profit share from a smaller revenue total, helped by favorable exchange rates and an improved sales mix.
Sales mix means the balance of different vehicles a company sells. Models differ in price and profitability, so a shift toward vehicles that contribute more profit can support earnings even when fewer vehicles are sold. Hyundai identified expanded hybrid electric vehicle sales as part of that improvement.
Hybrids combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. Their contribution to Hyundai's results shows why the type of vehicle sold matters alongside the total number. The company attributed lower sales volume to fewer operating days and production disruptions at its domestic plants.
Profit beat expectations, but revenue missed
Hyundai's operating profit exceeded the consensus forecast compiled by financial data provider FnGuide. Analysts had expected 2.5583 trillion won, putting the actual result 118.9 billion won, or 4.6%, above that estimate.
Revenue fell short of the same set of expectations. The forecast was 45.6273 trillion won, compared with the actual 45.1102 trillion won. That left a gap of 517.1 billion won, equivalent to roughly 1.1% of the revenue estimate.
The operating margin also exceeded expectations. Hyundai's 5.9% margin was 0.3 percentage point above the anticipated 5.6%. Together, the figures show that the company generated more operating profit than expected from less revenue than expected.
Performance was weaker when measured against the immediately preceding quarter. Revenue fell 8.3% from the second quarter, while operating profit declined 6.1%. The two comparisons answer different questions: Hyundai improved operating profit against the same period a year earlier, while both revenue and operating profit fell from the previous three months.
Why net income tells a different story
Hyundai's net income fell to 1.9317 trillion won despite the increase in operating profit. Profit from continuing operations before income tax also declined, dropping 12.6% to 2.9066 trillion won.
Operating profit focuses on earnings from running the business. Profit before tax also reflects items outside that operating calculation, while net income accounts for tax and other applicable items. These measures can therefore move in different directions within the same quarter.
The reported figures do not include a detailed explanation of the items behind the decline in net income. The practical result is that Hyundai improved its operating earnings while finishing the quarter with less net profit than a year earlier.
The nine month figures show a broader squeeze on profitability. Revenue rose 0.6% to 140.2645 trillion won, but operating profit fell 17.7% to 8.0428 trillion won. Net income dropped 19.3% to 7.4046 trillion won.
Dividing nine month operating profit by revenue gives an operating margin of approximately 5.7%. Revenue was slightly higher than in the comparable period, yet the company retained less of it as operating profit. The stronger third quarter comparison therefore sits alongside a substantial decline in cumulative earnings.
A smaller annual sales goal
Hyundai reduced its 2026 global sales target by 160,000 vehicles, from 4.16 million to 4 million. That is a reduction of about 3.8% from the target announced in January.
The revised figure changes the scale of the company's annual ambitions. Hyundai is now planning for fewer vehicle sales than it expected at the beginning of the year, following a quarter in which fewer operating days and domestic production interruptions weighed on volume.
Hyundai said it updated its 2026 guidance to reflect changes in the business environment. The adjustment covered several measures at once, including sales, operating margin and investment, rather than vehicle volume alone.
The sequence of targets and results helps explain the change:
- January: Hyundai set a global sales target of 4.16 million vehicles and an operating margin target of 6.3% to 7.3%.
- Second quarter: Revenue and operating profit were above the levels subsequently recorded in the third quarter.
- Third quarter: Revenue fell 3.4% from a year earlier, while operating profit rose 5.5% and net income fell 24.2%.
- Guidance update: Hyundai lowered its sales target to 4 million vehicles, revised its margin range and reduced planned investment.
Lower margins and less planned investment
Hyundai revised its annual operating margin target to 5.5% to 6.5%, down from 6.3% to 7.3%. Both ends of the range fell by 0.8 percentage point. The midpoint moved from 6.8% to 6.0%.
The third quarter margin of about 5.9% falls within the revised range and below the original range. That comparison gives readers a concrete measure of the reset: profitability achieved in the quarter fits the company's new annual expectations more closely than its initial ones.
Hyundai also reduced its investment plan from 17.8 trillion won to 16 trillion won. The 1.8 trillion won reduction amounts to approximately 10.1% of the original budget, a larger proportional cut than the 3.8% reduction in the vehicle sales target.
The company set its revenue growth target at 1.0% to 2.0%. Revenue and vehicle sales need not change at the same rate because revenue also depends on prices, exchange rates and the mix of vehicles sold. Hyundai's quarterly results illustrate that relationship: changes in sales mix and currency helped profitability while revenue and volume declined.
What the results mean for Hyundai
Hyundai enters the next reporting period with evidence that its vehicle mix can support operating earnings during a decline in revenue. Expanded hybrid sales were part of that support, making their contribution a concrete feature of this quarter's performance.
Production continuity also matters. Fewer operating days and interruptions at domestic plants reduced sales volume, limiting the number of vehicles contributing to revenue. A more profitable mix helped absorb that pressure, while the lower annual sales target reset expectations for the number of vehicles Hyundai aims to sell.
The main financial comparisons point in different directions for specific reasons. Operating profit rose from a year earlier but declined from the previous quarter. Nine month revenue increased slightly, while operating profit and net income fell. Annual targets were lowered even though quarterly operating profit beat market expectations.
Hyundai's immediate challenge is to sustain the profit contribution from its sales mix while working toward reduced annual targets. The third quarter delivered better operating profitability than a year earlier, but the cumulative earnings figures and revised investment budget show a company adjusting its plans to more difficult conditions.
