The visit to the mall in Velacherry brought the actor together with composer Anirudh Ravichander, director Nelson Dilipkumar and his grandson Lingaa. A video released by Sun Pictures on October 24 showed Rajinikanth arriving by car, entering the cinema and sitting among viewers.
By the end of October 24, its tenth day in cinemas, Jailer 2 had collected an estimated Rs 666.30 crore worldwide, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. That left it Rs 24.70 crore behind the Rs 691 crore worldwide total cited for 2.0, the Tamil film holding the record.
The evening offered fans something beyond another box office milestone: a chance to watch Rajinikanth react to the same scenes they were cheering. For the production team, it also brought the actor, director and composer into the audience during the film's second week.
What happened inside the Chennai theatre?
Rajinikanth arrived quietly for the screening at the newly renovated cinema. Anirudh was among those who welcomed him, and the video showed the actor wearing a cap as he watched the film.
The film's team said some fans took photographs with Rajinikanth and that he was escorted out before the rest of the audience left. Viewers cheered and clapped during the show.
The venue was identified as PVR Cinemas in descriptions of the visit, while another identified it as Jazz Cinemas. Several described the auditorium as an IMAX screen. The consistent location was Phoenix Mall in Chennai's Velacherry area.
Lingaa, Rajinikanth's grandson and the son of actor Dhanush, was also present. Nelson joined the outing, bringing several people closely associated with the sequel into the same auditorium.
Sun Pictures makes the 40 year claim
Sun Pictures, the production company behind Jailer 2, published its video on X on October 24. The company presented the screening as an unusual occasion in Rajinikanth's relationship with his audience.
For the first time in 40 years, Superstar Rajinikanth joins fans to witness Jailer 2 on the big screen!
The claim concerns watching his own film alongside fans in a public cinema. Sun Pictures also promoted the film as an industry blockbuster, and Sithara Entertainments repeated the message about the visit.
Rajinikanth's appearance followed a release that had already drawn large advance bookings and praise from actors and filmmakers. His presence gave the audience at this particular screening a personal encounter with the star at the centre of that success.
From release day to the second weekend
Jailer 2 opened worldwide on October 15, 2026. Its first ten days included the Dussehra holiday on October 20 and a second weekend that brought a sharp rise in Saturday ticket sales.
The main developments followed this sequence:
- October 15: Jailer 2 opened with Rs 59.70 crore in India net collections and Rs 125.25 crore in worldwide gross collections.
- October 20: The Dussehra holiday fell during the film's first week in cinemas.
- October 23: Rajinikanth attended the Chennai screening. The film earned Rs 14.50 crore net in India that Friday.
- October 24: Sun Pictures released the screening video. Saturday collections rose to Rs 24.15 crore net in India, taking the worldwide gross estimate to Rs 666.30 crore after ten days.
The Friday result was the film's lowest daily India collection at that stage. Saturday's figure was about 66.6 per cent higher, adding fresh momentum as the sequel approached the total earned by 2.0.
How much has Jailer 2 earned?
Sacnilk's estimates put Jailer 2 at Rs 373 crore in India net collections after ten days, including Rs 334.35 crore during its first week. Overseas markets contributed Rs 229.50 crore to the worldwide gross total, including Rs 10 crore on the second Saturday.
The ten day India gross estimate was Rs 436.80 crore, which, added to the Rs 229.50 crore overseas gross, gives the Rs 666.30 crore worldwide estimate. Tamil Nadu accounted for Rs 169.50 crore of the India gross.
The daily India net figures, show counts and occupancy through October 24 were:
- October 15, Day 1: Rs 59.70 crore, 16,599 shows and 55.4 per cent occupancy.
- October 16, Day 2: Rs 37.10 crore, 13,157 shows and 48.2 per cent occupancy.
- October 17, Day 3: Rs 47.25 crore, 14,604 shows and 53.9 per cent occupancy.
- October 18, Day 4: Rs 55.85 crore, 15,473 shows and 62.0 per cent occupancy.
- October 19, Day 5: Rs 42.35 crore, 15,215 shows and 49.9 per cent occupancy.
- October 20, Day 6: Rs 46.80 crore, 15,529 shows and 53.4 per cent occupancy.
- October 21, Day 7: Rs 28.15 crore, 14,470 shows and 34.8 per cent occupancy.
- October 22, Day 8: Rs 17.15 crore, 13,241 shows and 25.2 per cent occupancy.
- October 23, Day 9: Rs 14.50 crore, 10,484 shows and 26.7 per cent occupancy.
- October 24, Day 10: Rs 24.15 crore, 11,591 shows and 35.8 per cent occupancy.
On Day 10, Tamil contributed Rs 16.25 crore net from 5,545 shows, Telugu Rs 4.40 crore from 1,835 shows, Hindi Rs 2.90 crore from 4,008 shows and Kannada Rs 0.60 crore from 203 shows. Tamil net collections had been Rs 9.35 crore on Day 9. The Day 10 regional breakdown for Tamil 2D screenings listed Chennai at 993 shows and 72.5 per cent occupancy; those are regional figures, not figures for the cinema Rajinikanth visited.
The tracker says its box office data are compiled from various sources and its own research, may be approximate or differ substantially from producer figures, and are not claimed as authentic. The available figures do not include the underlying tracked venue-day data or specific sourcing for the PVR, Jazz Cinemas and IMAX descriptions.
Gross means ticket revenue before applicable taxes are deducted. Net is the amount after those taxes. Worldwide gross combines gross collections in India and abroad, so the India net figure and worldwide gross measure different things.
One crore equals 10 million rupees. The worldwide estimate of Rs 666.30 crore therefore represents about Rs 6.66 billion in ticket sales. These box office totals describe cinema revenue; the figures given do not include the production and distribution costs needed to calculate profit.
First week worldwide estimates were Rs 542 crore in one account and more than Rs 549 crore in another. The more recent ten day figures provide the clearest point for comparing the sequel with the totals cited for earlier films.
Overseas sales accounted for about 34.4 per cent of the Rs 666.30 crore worldwide total. In simple terms, roughly one rupee in every three collected at cinemas came from outside India.
The sequel passes Jailer and approaches 2.0
The original Jailer, released in 2023, finished its theatrical run with Rs 604.74 crore worldwide. Jailer 2 had already passed that total by its ninth day, when its worldwide estimate stood at Rs 628.05 crore.
At Rs 666.30 crore after ten days, the sequel was Rs 61.56 crore ahead of its predecessor's lifetime worldwide takings, a difference of about 10.2 per cent. Its overseas total of Rs 229.50 crore also exceeded the original film's Rs 196 crore by Rs 33.50 crore.
The India comparison was closer at the end of day nine: Jailer 2 had earned Rs 348.85 crore net, against Rs 348.55 crore over the original film's entire run. By day ten, the sequel's India net total had risen to Rs 373 crore.
Jailer 2 was ranked as the second highest grossing Tamil film worldwide at this stage, behind 2.0. The production team expressed hope that it would eventually reach Rs 1,000 crore. Reaching that target would require another Rs 333.70 crore beyond the ten day estimate.
Advance sales reveal the scale of demand
Jailer 2 sold 29.69 lakh advance tickets in India by the morning of release, generating Rs 57.30 crore, according to Sacnilk. A lakh is 100,000, so that represented almost 2.97 million tickets booked before the opening day's screenings were complete.
Bookings for opening day accounted for 14.47 lakh tickets and Rs 30.90 crore. That was about 54 per cent of the advance revenue recorded across the dates being tracked.
The opening day advance total exceeded the Rs 23.25 crore recorded for Rajinikanth's Annaatthe by Rs 7.65 crore, or about 32.9 per cent. It ranked below the advance booking total for his previous release, Coolie.
Actual opening day India net collections reached Rs 59.70 crore across 16,599 shows. The film achieved that launch without an audio release event, a promotional occasion often used to introduce a film's music and bring its stars before fans.
Demand varied across languages and showtimes by the second Friday. Tamil screenings recorded average occupancy of 34.77 per cent, rising from 21.15 per cent in the morning to 50.77 per cent at night. Telugu screenings averaged 27.35 per cent and Hindi screenings 17.07 per cent.
Who returns, and what is the story?
Rajinikanth returns as retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian in a sequel directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran through Sun Pictures. Anirudh Ravichander again composed the music, reuniting the central creative team behind the 2023 film.
The story brings Muthuvel into conflict with new enemies connected to an idol smuggling network. His efforts to protect his family also carry forward the consequences of his son's death in the first film.
Ramya Krishnan returns as Muthuvel's wife. Yogi Babu, Mirnaa Menon and Rithvik also return, while S J Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty and Suraj Venjaramoodu join the ensemble.
Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Jackie Shroff reprise cameo roles. Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi are also named among the appearances, bringing together performers associated with several Indian film industries.
A video from the production prompted fan questions about scenes featuring Santhanam and whether they had been removed. No confirmed explanation or release date for those scenes was given.
Actors and filmmakers celebrate the release
Riteish Deshmukh shared his reaction both during the interval and after watching the film. The Bollywood actor described a cinema experience filled with applause and cheering, writing after the screening:
I have clapped, whistled and cheered at every entry
Dhanush attended the first show on release day and urged audiences to see the sequel. The actor and filmmaker called it:
A FEAST for every Thalaivar fan.
Thalaivar, a Tamil word meaning leader, is a name widely used by Rajinikanth's admirers. Dhanush's reaction was among several public endorsements from prominent film personalities during the opening period.
Kamal Haasan congratulated Rajinikanth, Nelson, Anirudh and Sun Pictures on the film's worldwide reception. Nelson replied with thanks. Allu Arjun also praised the film on X, while actors Vishnu Vishal and Soori, director Karthik Subbaraj and producer Nagavamsi were among those seen at the opening show.
Subbaraj praised the combination of Rajinikanth's performance, Nelson's direction and Anirudh's music. Directors Lingusamy and Venkat Prabhu also congratulated the team. Some fans described Jailer 2 as a comeback after the mixed reception to Coolie.
The immediate box office benchmark is now concrete: Rs 24.70 crore separates Jailer 2's ten day worldwide estimate from the Rs 691 crore total cited for 2.0. Its second Saturday recovery, substantial overseas revenue and early lead over the original Jailer explain why that comparison has become central to its theatrical run.
