iPhone Duo Launch Slots Vanish in Vietnam as Delivery Estimates Stretch to January

Five minutes to lose an October 23 delivery

Apple's first foldable iPhone exhausted its initial October 23 delivery slots in Vietnam within five minutes of preorders opening at 7 p.m. on October 16, 2026. Later that evening, Apple Store Vietnam displayed January 27, 2027, delivery estimates across all configurations, turning a race to buy the iPhone Duo into a wait of more than three months for some customers.

The rush came despite prices starting at almost 65 million dong and a 30 million dong deposit at authorized retailers. TopZone said its initial deposit slots disappeared in one minute. By 7:10 p.m., Thế Giới Di Động had stopped accepting orders, while CellphoneS and FPT Shop also reported exhausted allocations or longer delivery waits.

Thế Giới Di Động's official preorder page recorded 22,688 customer registrations as of October 16. The retailer said the figure was a snapshot rather than a live count, and that its first shipment was very limited. Complete figures for successful deposits, completed purchases and Vietnam's initial allocation have not been released.

Apple described the response in a company statement, calling preorder demand:

nothing short of extraordinary.

Apple said it would continue taking online orders while working to deliver devices as quickly as possible. The widening delivery window also appeared in the United States, where every storage and color combination eventually showed a late January arrival.

For Vietnamese buyers, the immediate consequence is practical: October 23 remains the launch date, but the date an individual customer receives a phone depends on the seller's allocation and when payment was completed.

How the launch window narrowed

Apple opened preorders simultaneously at 8 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time and 7 p.m. in Hanoi on October 16. Customers encountered waiting screens on Apple Store Online, while major retail websites also became difficult to access.

The opening minutes were uneven. Some customers could not reach Apple's ordering page for two to three minutes; other observations recorded the waiting screen lasting until 7:07 p.m. Initial delivery estimates moved through October 27 and late November before later listings shifted into January.

  • September 9 in the United States, September 10 in Vietnam: Apple introduced the iPhone Duo alongside the iPhone 18 Pro series.
  • October 12–15: Apple's order preparation portal let customers save their preferred configuration and checkout details.
  • October 16, 7 p.m. Hanoi time: Vietnam preorders opened through Apple and authorized retailers.
  • October 16, approximately 7:05 p.m.: Initial October 23 delivery slots had disappeared across configurations on Apple Store Vietnam.
  • Later on October 16: Apple Store estimates reached January 25, 2027, in the United States and January 27 in Vietnam.
  • October 23, from 8 a.m.: Thế Giới Di Động scheduled its first deliveries, with subsequent handovers arranged in batches.

FPT Shop told customers to expect delivery no earlier than December without committing to a precise date. Another retailer displayed a December 1–31 window, with an exact appointment to follow payment of the deposit. The different dates reflected the delivery schedules offered by each sales channel as reservations filled.

A 30 million dong place in the queue

Thế Giới Di Động, TopZone, CellphoneS, FPT Shop and Minh Tuấn Mobile were among the retailers requiring a 30 million dong deposit. Previous launches, including the iPhone 18 Pro, commonly required one million dong. The new amount is 30 times as large and equals about 46% of the Duo's entry price.

Retailers said an order became successful only after the deposit payment was completed. Thế Giới Di Động's published terms put customers in delivery order according to that completion time. Its deposit was fully refundable, without a fee, if a buyer changed their mind.

Apple Store Online required the entire purchase price at checkout. That made the financial commitment different: almost 65 million dong immediately for the cheapest configuration through Apple, compared with 30 million dong initially through participating retailers and the remaining balance later.

Retail representatives said the larger deposit was intended to reduce duplicate or speculative reservations and give a better measure of genuine demand for a new product. A customer reserving the same phone at several stores can make demand appear larger than the eventual number of purchases, complicating allocation decisions.

Booking rules also varied by channel. Apple Store Vietnam limited purchases to two phones per customer, while some retailer programs allowed one. Thế Giới Di Động published a booking period ending at 11:59 p.m. on October 22; other retailer announcements described an initial window ending October 17. Deposit availability ended much earlier wherever the allocated slots filled.

What the four storage options cost

Apple Vietnam listed four capacities, with the same core hardware and a choice of Star White or Night Sky. Thế Giới Di Động's October 16 price table showed slightly lower retail prices alongside Apple's prices:

  • 256 GB: 64,999,000 dong through Apple; 64,990,000 dong at Thế Giới Di Động.
  • 512 GB: 71,499,000 dong through Apple; 71,490,000 dong at Thế Giới Di Động.
  • 1 TB: 84,499,000 dong through Apple; 84,490,000 dong at Thế Giới Di Động.
  • 2 TB: 103,999,000 dong through Apple; 103,990,000 dong at Thế Giới Di Động.

The highest capacity costs 39 million dong more than the entry model, an increase of about 60% using either price list. Storage is the main choice separating those tiers: buyers paying more get additional space for applications, photographs and video rather than a larger display or a different processor.

Thế Giới Di Động advertised support of up to three million dong for trading in an older device and installment plans with 0% interest for terms of up to 18 months. Di Động Việt advertised benefits totaling up to 10 million dong, combining trade benefits of up to six million dong with payment discounts of up to four million dong.

Those advertised maximums depended on conditions such as the device exchanged, payment method and remaining promotional slots. The amount due and delivery appointment therefore depended on the customer's particular transaction.

Why production is under pressure

Manufacturing reports point to a difficult combination: a flexible display, a complex titanium hinge and strict requirements for finished devices. Accounts from assembly partners put the share of completed products meeting standards at just over 60%, with Foxconn potentially needing more than a year to stabilize production.

That share is called production yield. If a process has a yield slightly above 60%, only slightly more than 60 out of every 100 units produced pass the required checks. Raising factory output while many units still fail inspection increases wasted materials and costs, rather than producing the same increase in saleable phones.

Supply chain estimates put Apple's planned 2026 Duo stock at six million to eight million devices, compared with 20 million to 30 million typically associated with an iPhone Pro or Pro Max product cycle. Counterpoint Research director Tarun Pathak separately expected roughly six million or fewer Duos to be available in the near term. Those estimates cover different periods and measures, but both describe a limited initial supply.

Pathak pointed to roughly 1.4 billion iPhones already in use. Six million devices would equal about 0.43% of that base, or roughly one Duo for every 233 existing iPhones. Even a small group of owners seeking the new design could therefore put heavy pressure on early availability.

Vietnam's retailers faced that constraint locally. Initial allocations were described as far below expected demand, and several stopped taking money rather than continue filling an uncertain queue. Customers who missed the first allocation were offered notification registrations for later deposit rounds.

What changes when the phone unfolds

The iPhone Duo opens like a book, revealing a 7.6 inch Super Retina XDR display. A separate 5.4 inch screen handles tasks while the device is closed. The larger surface allows two applications to appear beside each other, such as a document and a messaging conversation.

Thế Giới Di Động lists adaptive ProMotion refresh rates of up to 120 Hz, an Always On display and maximum outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits for both screens. Refresh rate describes how often the image updates; a higher rate can make movement and scrolling appear smoother. Nits measure screen brightness.

The retailer describes a hinge containing more than 100 mechanical components, with magnets helping the halves close securely and supporting different opening angles. The inner display uses 10 thin layers and a nanotexture surface intended to reduce reflections and make the fold less visible.

The device has a titanium frame and an IP68 rating for resistance to dust and water. Its folding design also allows it to stand partly open for video calls or viewing without being held.

Apple Pencil support has a later timetable. Thế Giới Di Động says compatibility with Apple Pencil using USB-C, on both screens, is scheduled through a software update in late 2026. That puts handwriting and document signing with the stylus after the October launch; no exact update date was given.

Camera and battery details need attention

Thế Giới Di Động lists a 48 megapixel main rear camera and a 48 megapixel ultra wide camera, with a 12 megapixel output at 2x zoom from the main camera. Early launch descriptions instead identified the second rear camera as a separate 12 megapixel telephoto lens. The retailer's detailed specification assigns the 2x function to the main camera and identifies the second lens as ultra wide.

The listed video capability reaches 4K at 120 frames per second on the main camera. A 12 megapixel Center Stage camera serves the outer display, while a FaceTime camera sits beneath the inner screen. The retailer also describes a preview feature that lets people being photographed see the framing on the outer display.

Battery figures vary slightly. Thế Giới Di Động lists up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer display; early launch descriptions gave 45 hours for the outer screen. The retailer also lists up to 24 hours of typical use. Video playback and mixed daily use involve different workloads, so buyers can expect battery life to depend on what they do and which screen they use.

The A20 Pro processor works with a vapor chamber cooling system, which spreads heat away from busy components. The retailer claims sustained performance up to 35% better than the iPhone 17 Pro during demanding activity such as extended gaming or video editing.

Other changes affect everyday setup. The phone uses eSIM only, meaning a mobile plan is activated digitally rather than with a removable SIM card. The retailer lists support for more than 500 carriers, including Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone. Fingerprint authentication through Touch ID is built into the side button.

A small sales share with a large price premium

IDC forecasts roughly seven million Duo shipments in 2026, about 3% of Apple's total phone shipments, followed by growth of around 70% in 2027. Applying that growth rate to seven million would produce approximately 11.9 million devices the following year.

Nabila Popal, global senior research director for IDC's Consumer Device Team, forecasts that Apple could reach roughly 40% of the global foldable market in 2027. She described the product's appeal in terms of Apple's existing customer base and brand:

Duo is fast becoming an aspirational foldable.

IDC expects foldables to account for just over 2% of worldwide smartphone units in 2026 but nearly 7% of industry revenue. By 2030, it forecasts about 3% of units and 10% of revenue. Expensive devices can generate a much larger share of spending than their share of phones sold.

JPMorgan expects the Duo's higher average selling price to support iPhone revenue even with total iPhone shipments roughly flat in 2027. A buyer moving from an approximately $1,200 premium iPhone to a Duo starting at $1,999 brings Apple about $800 more in sales before considering storage upgrades.

D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria also identified potential customers among existing Apple owners and users of folding Android phones. He said the Duo could draw visitors into stores who ultimately buy a cheaper iPhone, giving the broader range attention even when the foldable itself is beyond their budget.

What buyers can expect next

October 23 remains the first scheduled handover date in Vietnam. Thế Giới Di Động says deliveries begin at 8 a.m. and proceed in batches according to completed deposits. Customers with a confirmed early appointment are therefore in a different position from those entering a later reservation round.

Apple continued accepting online orders with longer estimates. Retailers that closed deposits offered notifications, while FPT Shop warned of a wait extending into December without a firm appointment. Apple's later January 27 estimate made its Vietnam queue longer still.

The immediate tradeoff for customers is between paying to secure a place and accepting a potentially long wait. Refundable deposits give buyers a way to leave the queue, while the published delivery terms determine when the remaining payment and collection take place.
