CSK Trade Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis to SRH for Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards

Four Players Change Teams Before the IPL 2027 Auction

Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad have completed a four player trade that sends Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards to Chennai, while fast bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis move to Hyderabad. The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed the exchange on November 5, 2026, ahead of the November 17 deadline for franchises to submit their retained and released player lists.

Livingstone will join CSK for INR 6 crore, down from the INR 13 crore SRH paid to acquire him. Edwards moves at his existing fee of INR 3 crore. Hyderabad will take on Khaleel at INR 4.8 crore and Ellis at INR 2 crore.

The exchange gives Chennai two allrounders, players who can contribute with both bat and ball, while Hyderabad adds two specialist fast bowlers. It also brings together four players whose opportunities were limited during IPL 2026: Livingstone played twice, Khaleel appeared in five matches, and injuries kept Edwards and Ellis out for the entire season.

Chennai is making these changes alongside a major coaching overhaul, with Zaheer Khan replacing Stephen Fleming as head coach. Hyderabad, meanwhile, is rebuilding its bowling options, including through a separate trade for left arm seamer T Natarajan from Delhi Capitals.

The next major decision comes on November 17, when both teams must settle their retention lists. The auction follows on December 16 in Goa, leaving each franchise to decide which remaining gaps to address after this exchange.

How the Contract Figures Add Up

Livingstone's revised fee is the largest financial change in the deal. His move from INR 13 crore to INR 6 crore represents a reduction of INR 7 crore, or about 54%. One crore equals 10 million rupees, so his new fee is INR 60 million, compared with INR 130 million previously.

Chennai is taking on contracts worth INR 9 crore for Livingstone and Edwards combined, while transferring contracts worth INR 6.8 crore for Khaleel and Ellis. On those stated fees, CSK's incoming commitments exceed its outgoing commitments by INR 2.2 crore.

Hyderabad's two departing players previously carried combined fees of INR 16 crore. Its two incoming bowlers carry combined fees of INR 6.8 crore, a difference of INR 9.2 crore. Those figures give SRH more financial room as it prepares its remaining squad decisions.

The exchange also changes the balance of overseas players between the squads. Chennai receives two overseas players and sends out one overseas player and one Indian player. Hyderabad makes the reverse adjustment. That balance matters when teams choose their match combinations, because the IPL limits how many overseas players can appear in a playing XI.

What Livingstone Brings to Chennai

Livingstone arrives with 8,595 runs and 171 wickets across 370 T20 matches. His bowling includes both offspin and legspin, giving Chennai different ways to respond to opposing batters without selecting another specialist bowler.

The England international has played 51 IPL matches, scoring more than 1,000 runs at a strike rate above 155. Strike rate measures runs scored per 100 balls faced. A rate above 155 means scoring faster than 1.55 runs per delivery on average, a useful measure of attacking output in a format where each side usually faces only 120 legal balls.

Livingstone was part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 title winning squad before his brief spell in Hyderabad. His record also includes 100 international appearances for England and more than 1,500 international runs.

His latest tournament figures offer a more modest picture of recent batting returns. Playing for Glasgow Cosmic in the inaugural European T20 Premier League, he scored 219 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 128.82. Chennai is therefore acquiring substantial experience and a strong career scoring rate, alongside a player seeking a more productive IPL season after only two appearances for SRH in 2026.

Edwards Arrives With a Changed Profile

Edwards is a player Chennai had already tried to sign. Hyderabad outbid CSK for the Australian at the auction ahead of IPL 2026, paying INR 3 crore. At that auction, he was the only overseas player without an international appearance to secure a contract.

A foot injury then kept Edwards out of the entire IPL season. He now joins Chennai at the same fee, but with international experience added to his record: he has since made his ODI and T20I debuts for Australia.

In his second ODI, Edwards took five wickets against South Africa in Johannesburg. An ODI is an international match in which each team can bat for up to 50 overs, compared with 20 overs in a T20 match. Taking five wickets means dismissing half of the opposing side's ten available batters, a substantial contribution by one bowler.

Edwards has taken 58 wickets and scored 865 runs in T20 cricket. He is an established contributor for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, has toured India several times with Australia A, and has played for Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket under Ricky Ponting.

His seam bowling gives Chennai a different option from Livingstone's spin. Together, the two arrivals increase the number of players available who can provide batting depth while also delivering overs.

Why Hyderabad Wants Khaleel Back

Khaleel returns to the franchise he represented from 2018 to 2021. His most productive recent IPL season came after he joined Chennai ahead of the 2025 competition, when he took 15 wickets in 14 matches.

His 2026 campaign lasted only five matches before a right quadriceps injury ended his season. The quadriceps are the muscles at the front of the thigh, which help a fast bowler run in, maintain balance and drive through the delivery.

At Hyderabad, Khaleel will join Natarajan, another left arm seamer acquired through a trade. Having both players gives SRH more options when choosing how to divide bowling responsibilities between the start and end of an innings.

Former SRH player Tirumalasetti Suman identified Khaleel's ability to bowl early in an innings as a reason for the exchange. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said:

Khaleel Ahmed can bowl three overs with the new ball in the powerplay.

The powerplay covers the first six overs of a standard T20 innings, when fielding restrictions give batters more opportunities to attack. A bowler who can handle three of those overs can fill half of that opening phase, allowing the captain to save other options for later.

Ellis Gives SRH an Option for the Final Overs

Ellis leaves Chennai having played just one match for the franchise across two seasons. CSK had expected him to handle bowling duties near the end of an innings in place of Matheesha Pathirana, but a hamstring injury sustained in the domestic One-Day Cup final ruled him out of IPL 2026. Spencer Johnson replaced him.

Hyderabad is acquiring Ellis at his existing INR 2 crore fee. He has also played for Sunrisers Leeds, SRH's sister franchise in The Hundred, giving him experience within the wider Sunrisers organisation.

Suman, the former Hyderabad player, praised the Australian's ability to bowl at different stages of an innings:

And Nathan Ellis is a brilliant death-overs bowler. He bowls in the middle overs and death overs as well. His back-of-the-hand slower ball is also very good.

The death overs are the final overs, when batters usually take greater risks to score quickly. A slower delivery changes the pace the batter expects, potentially disrupting the timing of a big shot. Ellis gives Hyderabad an option for that demanding role as well as for the middle portion of an innings.

Suman also linked the trade to uncertainty over captain Pat Cummins' availability, which he described as "50-50". Cummins' participation has not been confirmed here by the player or franchise; Suman's assessment explains why he believes adding bowling cover was a priority.

Chennai Must Rebuild Its Pace Options

Chennai gains batting and bowling flexibility through Livingstone and Edwards, but loses two specialist fast bowlers in the same transaction. Khaleel's departure creates a particular opening among its Indian left arm seamers.

Mukesh Choudhary and Gurjapneet Singh are the remaining left arm options identified to take on greater responsibility. Their performances and availability will help determine how Chennai divides the new ball workload and whether it seeks further reinforcements at the auction.

Edwards can contribute seam overs, while Livingstone provides spin. Those skills broaden the squad's combinations, although Chennai still needs to allocate the specialist tasks previously intended for Khaleel and Ellis: bowling early against attacking openers and finishing an innings under pressure.

Fitness will be central to both franchises' planning. Edwards missed all of IPL 2026 with a foot injury, Ellis missed it with a hamstring injury, and Khaleel's quadriceps injury cut short his season. Their moves give them fresh opportunities, with selection dependent on their readiness to play.

A New Coaching Team Will Shape CSK's Choices

Zaheer Khan takes charge of Chennai after Stephen Fleming's departure, placing the trade within a broader change in how the team will be selected and prepared. Former South Africa allrounder Albie Morkel and former England spinner Gareth Batty have joined as assistant coaches, while former India seamer Mohit Sharma becomes bowling coach.

The restructuring also includes the departures of batting coach Michael Hussey, bowling coach Eric Simons and assistant coach Rajiv Kumar. Physiotherapist Tommy Simsek and strength and conditioning coach Greg King have left the support staff as well.

Assistant coach Sridharan Sriram and fielding coach James Foster remain in their roles, providing continuity within the revised setup.

The incoming coaches will have to decide where Livingstone fits in the batting order, how much bowling to ask of Edwards, and which seamers can take on the overs left by Khaleel and Ellis. Those choices connect the coaching changes directly to the squad's next recruitment decisions.

The Dates That Shape the Next Decisions

The BCCI has moved the retention deadline from November 15 to November 17, giving all 10 franchises two additional days to finalise which players they will keep and release. Player registration closes six days later.

The schedule leading to the auction is:

  • November 5, 2026: The BCCI confirmed the four player trade between Chennai and Hyderabad.
  • November 17, 2026: Franchises must submit their retained and released player lists.
  • November 23, 2026: Player registration closes.
  • December 3, 2026: The final auction list is expected to be released.
  • December 16, 2026: Goa hosts the auction, scheduled to take place in one day.

The 2027 mini auction is expected to be the last before a mega auction ahead of the 2028 season. A mini auction allows teams to address selected gaps while keeping much of their existing squad, whereas a mega auction involves a broader rebuilding process.

Chennai has used this trade to add two allrounders before those decisions arrive. Hyderabad has moved in the opposite direction, adding specialist pace bowling and reducing its combined contract commitments. The retention lists and December auction will show how each team completes that work.
