A New Shopping App Starts in TikTok's Biggest Sales Region

TikTok has launched a separate TikTok Shop app for iOS and Android in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines, giving its shopping business a dedicated destination in a region that generated an estimated $45.6 billion in merchandise sales in 2025.

Social media consultant Matt Navarra drew attention to the rollout on November 5, 2026. Shoppers can browse product recommendations, watch sellers demonstrate goods through short videos and livestreams, pay for purchases, track deliveries and contact support without opening the main TikTok app.

The launch puts a new shopping icon alongside established marketplace apps. TikTok is offering deals available only in the new app, free shipping offers and benefits for first orders to encourage people to try it.

Southeast Asia accounted for roughly 71% of TikTok Shop's estimated $64.3 billion in global merchandise sales in 2025, according to research firm Momentum Works. Starting there places the app close to the bulk of its existing business, although Indonesia, one of its largest markets, is outside the initial rollout.

TikTok's move also arrives as purchasing habits inside its platform change. Research on its American business suggests more sales are being completed through the marketplace section than through videos or livestreams. A dedicated app gives those shoppers a more direct route to the store while keeping videos available to help them choose products.

What Shoppers Get in the Separate App

The TikTok Shop app combines personalized product recommendations with tools for completing and managing an order. Its recommendations draw on shoppers' interests, while videos and livestreams let sellers show products in use.

The app listing advertises checkout and payments, order tracking and support available around the clock from purchase through delivery. First order discounts and free shipping are presented as offers, rather than a universal promise that every purchase will qualify.

TikTok is keeping the parts of its shopping service that rely on watching people demonstrate products. A buyer can still discover something through a video or a live presentation, but the shopping experience now has its own entrance.

The practical change is straightforward: someone who wants to shop can open TikTok Shop directly instead of entering the entertainment app first. Exclusive offers give existing TikTok shoppers a financial reason to make that extra download.

Why Southeast Asia Comes First

Momentum Works estimated that TikTok Shop's Southeast Asian merchandise sales doubled to $45.6 billion in 2025. Shopee remained the regional leader, with approximately $83.2 billion, leaving TikTok Shop at about 55% of its rival's sales value on those figures.

Merchandise sales are commonly measured as gross merchandise value, or GMV. This is the value of goods sold through a platform, rather than the money the platform keeps from commissions, advertising or other charges. The distinction matters when comparing the size of a marketplace with its income.

Southeast Asia already had a large TikTok audience before this latest shopping expansion. By 2022, the region had generated more than one trillion TikTok views. That history gave the company a substantial audience to introduce to shopping through creators and product demonstrations.

An estimate puts Southeast Asia's ecommerce GMV at $226 billion in 2026. That forecast describes the wider market, while TikTok Shop's $45.6 billion figure covers its regional sales in 2025. Together, they show the scale of the market the new app is entering.

Competition also extends beyond Shopee. Temu and Shein compete for shoppers seeking inexpensive goods, while YouTube has announced a partnership with AliExpress that connects another major video platform with online retail.

More Purchases Are Closing in the Marketplace

Momentum Works and data platform Tabcut estimated that the Shop marketplace section inside TikTok accounted for 51.4% of attributed American sales in the first half of 2026. Short videos accounted for 40.4%, and livestreams for 8.2%.

The marketplace share rose from 36% in 2025, an increase of 15.4 percentage points. In this measurement, sales are assigned to the shopping surface through which they were completed. A person might encounter a product in a video and later buy it through the marketplace.

The figures help explain the commercial logic of giving Shop its own app. TikTok can continue using videos to introduce products while also serving people who arrive ready to browse and buy.

American TikTok Shop sales reached an estimated $11.8 billion in the first half of 2026, up 103% from a year earlier, according to Momentum Works and Tabcut. The number of American stores exceeding $1 million in sales during that period grew eightfold to more than 5,700.

Those American purchasing patterns provide a useful comparison for the Southeast Asian launch. The new app's own sales, downloads and repeat purchasing rates have not been disclosed, and TikTok has not announced expansion dates or explained how creator content and commissions will work across the two apps.

A Reversal of Amazon's Video Shopping Strategy

Amazon launched its Inspire shopping feed in December 2022, bringing short videos and photographs into its retail service to help people discover products. TikTok's new app approaches the same meeting point from the opposite direction: a business built around video is creating a dedicated shopping destination.

Amazon wanted content to encourage purchases inside a marketplace. TikTok now wants a marketplace app that people open with shopping already in mind. Both approaches connect product discovery with checkout, but they begin with different customer habits.

TikTok's challenge is to make the separate download worthwhile. App exclusive discounts may bring people through the door, while product selection, pricing, delivery and support will shape whether they return. If existing purchases simply move from the main app into the new one, the company gains a different shopping entrance without necessarily gaining more sales.

The main TikTok platform has also expanded into games, restaurant guides, sports hubs, hotel booking and microdramas, while exploring payments. A separate Shop app gives retail a clearer destination as the main platform adds more activities.

Indonesia Shows Why the Launch Map Matters

Indonesia is absent from the four launch countries even though Momentum Works ranked it as TikTok Shop's second largest national market in 2025. Its history shows how local rules can shape the way shopping operates alongside social media.

Indonesia banned transactions on social platforms in 2023. TikTok Shop stopped operating there on October 4 of that year, then returned after TikTok bought a 75.01% stake in local marketplace Tokopedia for $840 million and routed Indonesian sales through it.

Zulkifli Hasan, Indonesia's trade minister at the time, described the required separation between the two types of service:

Now, e-commerce cannot become social media. It is separated.

The Indonesian arrangement gives TikTok a different operating structure from the four countries receiving the new app. The sequence of its shopping expansion spans several years:

  • 2021: TikTok Shop first launched.
  • December 2022: Amazon introduced its Inspire video shopping feed.
  • October 4, 2023: TikTok Shop shut down in Indonesia following restrictions on social commerce transactions.
  • After the shutdown: TikTok acquired 75.01% of Tokopedia for $840 million and returned through the local marketplace.
  • 2025: Momentum Works estimated TikTok Shop's Southeast Asian merchandise sales at $45.6 billion.
  • November 5, 2026: The separate TikTok Shop app rollout drew public attention in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Thailand's Marketplace Duties Remain Central

Thailand's inclusion gives shoppers another way to reach a platform already subject to closer regulatory attention. In October 2025, the Electronic Transactions Development Agency placed TikTok Shop in its category for marketplaces with high impact under Section 20 of the Digital Platform Services royal decree.

The stricter marketplace duties cover merchant verification, risk management and regulatory reporting. They address practical concerns such as identifying sellers, keeping merchant information current and managing risks involving fraud, illegal goods and unsafe products.

Thai corporate figures also illustrate why sales value and company income need separate explanations. Corporate data service Creden put TikTok Shop Thailand's 2024 revenue at 12 billion baht and its loss at 3.6 billion baht as the business invested in growth. Industry estimates placed merchandise sold through the Thai platform that year at about $5.7 billion to $5.9 billion.

For Thai shoppers, the new app changes the route into the marketplace. Seller identity, accurate product information, delivery and help when an order goes wrong remain central parts of the purchase. For merchants, the commercial opportunity sits alongside the platform's existing regulatory responsibilities.

Sellers and Creators Face a Different Shopping Journey

TikTok Shop has been adding tools for merchants alongside its consumer expansion. GMV Max Ads supports advertising, while List with AI creates product titles, descriptions and categories from an image and a brief description.

A recently integrated customer relationship management tool also lets sellers send messages and promotions to previous buyers and people who left products in their carts. Such tools help merchants seek another purchase after the initial product discovery.

A dedicated shopping destination could make clear listings, prices and storefront presentation more important because customers can arrive specifically to compare goods. Sellers who previously depended heavily on a successful video gain another place where shoppers might encounter their products.

Creators remain part of the app's format because videos and livestreams are included. Their commercial role depends on which content reaches shoppers and how purchases are connected to commissions. Those details matter to people who earn money by demonstrating a seller's goods and receiving a share of resulting sales.

TikTok Shop's product range has also moved beyond inexpensive goods from emerging brands. It has included luxury items such as handbags priced at $11,000 from Hermes and Chanel, alongside products from other major luxury and sports brands. That range brings a wider variety of purchases into the same shopping system.

The United States Is a Separate Decision

Navarra said the app was absent from both the American and British Apple App Stores at the time of the rollout. The American TikTok operation is separate from the global business, making the four Southeast Asian launches a geographically limited starting point.

A future American shopping app would enter a market where Amazon, Temu, Walmart and Target already compete for space on shoppers' phones. TikTok would need to persuade customers who can already buy inside its main app to use another one.

TikTok has announced partnerships and integrations aimed at the 2026 American holiday shopping season. Its American platform has also recently added voice comments and is working on travel booking within the app. Shopping expansion inside TikTok therefore continues alongside the separate app rollout elsewhere.

Momentum Works forecasts global TikTok Shop GMV of approximately $123.5 billion in 2026, compared with $16.3 billion in 2023. Against that growth target, the new app provides another route to purchases. Its commercial test is whether a dedicated destination can attract more shopping and repeat orders while retaining the product discovery that made TikTok Shop distinctive.
