Funeral Bundle Contained Pillows, Not a Baby
A woman and her husband in Bontang, East Kalimantan, admitted inventing a pregnancy and a baby's death after a funeral bundle was found to contain a pillow and a pink bolster, according to police. The incident took place in Loktuan, North Bontang district, on October 28, 2026.

The woman, identified as AR, had told relatives she was pregnant for about 10 months before announcing that her baby had died during childbirth. Police said she and her husband, identified as DN, acknowledged fabricating the story because she feared being considered unable to become pregnant by her own family and her husband's family.
Bontang Police public relations officer Dany Purwantoro announced the findings on November 2. Police also checked the claim that the baby had died following a delivery at RS Yabis Bontang. According to Dany, AR was neither registered as a patient there nor treated at the hospital for childbirth.
The discovery drew residents, religious figures, relatives and hospital representatives into a clarification process. What began as a supposed bereavement became a police inquiry into a fabricated pregnancy, a funeral involving household bedding and a claim that had brought a local hospital into the story.
How the Funeral Story Came Apart
AR's account to her family described a pregnancy lasting approximately 10 months, followed by a death during delivery. Relatives and residents were then presented with a bundle wrapped in a burial shroud, the cloth used to cover a body before burial.
Residents and local religious figures became suspicious during the funeral proceedings and asked for the wrapping to be opened. Inside were a pillow and a pink bolster, a long cushion commonly used on a bed.
The bundle was initially described as having been briefly buried, while the detailed account of residents intervening places their request to open it before burial. Both descriptions identify the contents as bedding rather than a baby's body.
The account gives no specific reason for the residents' suspicions. Their request to inspect the bundle nevertheless became the turning point: the contents contradicted the story that a baby had died and was being prepared for burial.
Police Checked the Hospital Claim
Bontang Police investigated information circulating about an alleged infant death after delivery at RS Yabis Bontang. That inquiry included checking whether AR had actually received maternity care at the hospital named in the story.
Dany said the investigation and statements from those involved showed that AR was not registered as a patient at RS Yabis and had never received medical treatment connected with childbirth there. The hospital check gave police a concrete way to examine the claimed delivery, alongside the discovery at the funeral.
Police then brought AR, DN, relatives from both families and representatives of RS Yabis together to clarify what had happened. During that process, police said, the couple acknowledged that the pregnancy and the reported death had been invented.
The hospital's role in the clarification mattered because the story circulating in the community had placed the alleged delivery there. Its representatives joined the discussion with the family and police as investigators established that AR had not received the claimed care.
Fear of Being Judged, According to Police
Dany attributed the fabrication to AR's fear that relatives would consider her unable to become pregnant. He described the motive in these words:
Hal tersebut dilakukan karena AR takut dianggap tidak bisa hamil oleh keluarga maupun keluarga mertuanya,
In English, Dany said the act was committed because AR feared being regarded as unable to become pregnant by her family and her husband's family. His explanation places that fear at the centre of the couple's account of why they maintained the story.
Police described both AR and DN as participating in the fabrication. Although AR was the person claiming to be pregnant, the admission reported by police involved the married couple, including the invented news that a baby had died during delivery.
The fear described by police concerned how AR believed relatives would judge her. The couple's medical history, any fertility assessment and the specific conversations within either family were not disclosed. Police also gave no details of criminal charges or further legal proceedings in their November 2 explanation.
From a Claimed Pregnancy to a Police Clarification
The events stretch from a pregnancy claim maintained for about 10 months to the funeral discovery and the later police statement. The dates place the public clarification five days after the incident in Loktuan.
- Before October 28, 2026: AR told relatives she had been pregnant for approximately 10 months, then said the baby had died during childbirth.
- October 28, 2026: Funeral proceedings took place in Loktuan, North Bontang. Residents and religious figures became suspicious, and the shrouded bundle was found to contain a pillow and a pink bolster.
- During the subsequent inquiry: Police checked the hospital claim and arranged a meeting involving the couple, both families and RS Yabis representatives.
- November 2, 2026: Dany announced that AR had not received childbirth care at RS Yabis and said the couple had admitted fabricating the pregnancy and death.
The sequence explains why several different groups became involved. Residents encountered the bundle at the funeral, the hospital was named in the alleged delivery, and relatives from both families were brought into the police clarification.
Police Urge Caution as the Story Spreads
The incident circulated widely on social media after the discovery. Dany urged people to check information before drawing conclusions or passing it on, saying:
Masyarakat diimbau untuk lebih bijak bermedia sosial. Jangan terburu-buru menyimpulkan atau menyebarkan informasi yang belum terverifikasi,
His message asked the public to use social media more carefully and avoid rushing to conclusions or spreading unverified information. In this case, the initial story involved both a supposed death and a named hospital, giving the claims consequences beyond the couple's immediate family.
Police based their explanation on the contents of the bundle, checks concerning the claimed hospital treatment and statements gathered during the clarification process. Those findings changed the public account from an alleged death during childbirth to an admitted fabrication involving a pregnancy and funeral.
