Three goals, one decisive partnership
Son Heung-min supplied two assists and scored in the 72nd minute as Los Angeles FC beat Austin FC 3-1 at BMO Stadium on October 14, ending four MLS matches without a victory and giving interim coach Xavi Tamarit his first league win in charge.

Denis Bouanga scored in the 52nd and 67th minutes before helping create Son's finish, meaning both attackers contributed to all three LAFC goals. The victory, watched by an announced crowd of 22,180, lifted LAFC to 45 points and kept the club sixth in the Western Conference.
Son's two assists took him to 15 for the MLS season, moving him ahead of Inter Miami's Lionel Messi and other players on 14. His goal was widely recorded as his seventh in the league and ninth across all competitions this season, including two in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. One match account listed the league goal as his sixth.
Austin FC's official match summary confirms Son's assists on both Bouanga goals and credits Jacob Shaffelburg and Bouanga with assists for Son's finish. Brandon Vázquez scored Austin's equalizer in the 66th minute, rather than the 65th minute given in some descriptions.
For LAFC, the most valuable part of the evening was the response to that equalizer. Within one minute, Bouanga had restored the lead. Six minutes after Austin drew level, Son had made the advantage two goals, turning a potentially difficult closing stretch into a much more comfortable finish.
A first half of chances without reward
Tamarit began with Bouanga at center forward and Son behind him in a 4-2-3-1 formation. That setup places four defenders behind two central midfielders, with three attacking players supporting a lone striker. Armindo Sieb and Finnish attacker Leo Walta occupied the positions either side of Son.
Walta, making his first LAFC start, provided some of the clearest attacking moments before halftime. His shot struck the crossbar in the 21st minute, and a later cross gave Bouanga a headed chance that went wide.
Son also had two attempts without scoring. He redirected a Sergi Palencia cross with his head in the 37th minute but missed the target, then had a right foot shot blocked near the end of the half. Ryan Porteous headed over from the corner that followed.
LAFC finished the half with 13 shots, only three of them on target. Son completed 86% of his passes and recorded 27 touches, but just one touch inside Austin's penalty area. Those figures help explain the frustration: LAFC were producing attempts, while Son had few opportunities close to goal.
Austin reached the interval at 0-0 despite that pressure. Combined with the clubs' goalless meeting in Austin earlier in the season, the teams had played three consecutive halves against each other without a goal.
Bouanga's movement opens the game
Bouanga moved toward his preferred position on the left after halftime, giving LAFC a different attacking shape. Son could run into the penalty area while Bouanga looked for space across the defense, rather than remaining fixed as the central striker.
The breakthrough began with pressure deep in Austin's half. Porteous headed a weak clearance toward Mark Delgado, who sent the ball into space for Son on the right side of the penalty area.
Son controlled the ball under pressure from three defenders. As the ball came across to Bouanga, the forward finished with his right foot from close range. The official scoring record awarded Son the assist, his 14th of the league campaign.
Bouanga's opener was his 16th league goal. Two minutes later, Son found him again for another shot, but Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver saved. LAFC's two leading attackers were now connecting in dangerous positions much more frequently than they had before the interval.
Austin's equalizer lasts one minute
Austin found a route back through pressure of their own. Aaron Long lost possession during an attempt to play out from defense, and Myrto Uzuni supplied Vázquez for a shot that beat Hugo Lloris in the 66th minute.
The move showed the risk of building attacks close to a team's own goal. When opponents win the ball there, the defending side has little time to recover before facing a shot. Austin turned that opportunity into an equalizer despite spending much of the match dealing with LAFC's attack.
Son immediately helped LAFC regain control. He closed down Stuver as the goalkeeper tried to clear, and the kick struck Son's body. The rebound dropped to Bouanga, who quickly finished inside the near post for his second goal.
The official record credited Son with another assist, taking him to 15. This one came through chasing and applying pressure rather than a conventional pass. Bouanga's finish took his league total to 17, leaving him three short of another season with at least 20 goals.
Shaffelburg helps Son finish the job
Jacob Shaffelburg had replaced Sieb in the 63rd minute, adding fresh running to LAFC's attack. Nine minutes later, the substitute helped deliver the move that settled the match.
Bouanga's headed touch released Shaffelburg, who sent a low pass into the penalty area. Son timed his run through the middle and met it with his right foot, directing the ball past Stuver for a 3-1 lead.
Austin's official summary gives both Shaffelburg and Bouanga assists on that goal. Shaffelburg's total rose to a career best five for the season. The substitution log also places Ryan Hollingshead's arrival in the 78th minute, with Shaffelburg supplying the pass for Son's finish.
Son left in the 78th minute, replaced by Sergio Vásquez, to a standing ovation from the home crowd. Bouanga stayed on in search of a third goal, but LAFC did not score again.
The decisive stretch unfolded as follows:
- 52nd minute: Bouanga scored from Son's assist to put LAFC ahead.
- 63rd minute: Shaffelburg replaced Sieb.
- 66th minute: Vázquez equalized from Uzuni's assist.
- 67th minute: Bouanga restored the lead after Stuver's clearance struck Son.
- 72nd minute: Son finished a move involving Bouanga and Shaffelburg.
- 78th minute: Son was substituted with LAFC leading 3-1.
More possession, fewer chances for Austin
Austin had 59.3% possession across the full match, compared with LAFC's 40.7%, according to the official statistics. Austin also completed more passes, attempting 606 to LAFC's 401.
LAFC nevertheless led the shot count 28-13. That is more than twice as many attempts despite having the ball for less time. The contrast captures the match's central pattern: Austin circulated possession, while LAFC generated more frequent opportunities to finish attacks.
Stuver made 10 saves, one short of his career high, while Lloris made three. Stuver's workload helped keep Austin in the contest, especially before LAFC's attackers found their finishing touch after halftime.
Austin had entered the fixture having conceded 51 goals in 28 league matches, an average of about 1.8 per game. That was the third highest total conceded in the Western Conference. Their difficulty containing LAFC continued that defensive trend.
A needed result for Tamarit
Tamarit took temporary charge after LAFC dismissed Marc Dos Santos. The Austin match supplied his first victory worth three league points and ended a run of two draws and two defeats in MLS.
LAFC's longer run had also been poor: this was only their second victory in 12 league matches since the beginning of August. The previous weekend, they had drawn 1-1 with Vancouver despite playing against 10 men after an early dismissal.
The win changed LAFC's record to 12 victories, nine draws and nine defeats. Under the league's points system, which awards three points for a win and one for a draw, that produces 45 points, up from 42 before kickoff.
LAFC stayed sixth in the West and stood four points above Seattle. Their home record improved to nine wins, three draws and three defeats, showing how much their results at BMO Stadium have contributed to their position.
Austin remained on 31 points after a second consecutive loss following eight matches without defeat. Their conference position was listed as 13th in some match accounts and 14th in others. Either position left them near the bottom of the 15 team conference as the regular season approached its finish.
Son's creativity matters as much as his scoring
Son's performance brought together three different parts of his attacking game: control under pressure for the opening goal, a determined chase for the second, and a timed run into the penalty area for the third.
His 15 league assists place his creative contribution alongside his scoring. An assist rewards involvement in setting up a goal, and MLS can credit more than one player in a scoring move, as it did for Bouanga and Shaffelburg on Son's finish.
Before the Austin match, Son had been credited with 94 shots and 48 chances created during the league season. Bouanga had created 52 chances alongside his scoring contribution. Those figures show a partnership in which both players help build attacks as well as finish them.
Son had also returned from an international break during which he scored against Ecuador, Uruguay and Uzbekistan. His South Korea total reached 59 goals, moving him past Cha Bum-kun's mark of 58 to become the country's leading scorer in men's international football.
His previous MLS goal had come against San Jose on September 20. The gap included an absence against Dallas for international duty, so the calendar wait was longer than the number of club appearances without scoring might suggest.
New York trip comes next
LAFC's next match was scheduled for Saturday, October 17, away to New York City FC at Citi Field. Austin were due to host Vancouver the same day, giving both clubs a short turnaround after the Wednesday fixture in Los Angeles.
LAFC then had home matches against the LA Galaxy on October 25 and Minnesota United on November 1, followed by a visit to Seattle on Decision Day, the final day of the regular season.
The Seattle fixture gives the four point gap between the clubs practical importance. LAFC's closing results will determine whether they protect their position or face greater pressure from teams below them, while a higher finish would improve their playoff placement.
Tamarit now has a successful second half to build on: Bouanga finding space from the left, Son arriving centrally, and Shaffelburg contributing from the bench. Against Austin, those movements turned a scoreless first half into three goals and a needed victory.
