Shinn Asuka Takes the Lead in a Story Between Two Wars
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO will open in Japanese theaters on January 15, 2027, followed by a North American theatrical release in February. The film puts Shinn Asuka at the center of a story set in Cosmic Era 74, when the theft of the Strike Freedom Gundam threatens efforts to build a new peace after the events of SEED DESTINY.

Bandai Namco Filmworks announced the North American release window at the GUNDAM Showcase 2026 @ NYC panel during New York Comic Con 2026 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Its North American announcement also confirmed Matthew Erickson as Shinn, Matt Hill as Kira Yamato and Sam Vincent as Athrun Zala in the English version. An exact February opening date and participating theaters have not been announced.
The Japanese premiere is confirmed in Bandai Namco Filmworks' Japanese release announcement, which also details advance tickets, a fan vote covering 287 scenes, convention appearances and merchandise extending into April 2027.
ZERO is a prequel to SEED FREEDOM, rather than a continuation of its ending. That earlier film opened in Japan on January 26, 2024, and earned more than 5 billion yen, with about 3 million admissions. The new film returns to the interval between SEED DESTINY and FREEDOM, bringing an existing screenplay to the screen and giving a character previously introduced in a bonus novel his animation debut.
A Stolen Gundam Disrupts the Peace Effort
The story begins after the collapse of Gilbert Dullindal's Destiny Plan, a proposal to determine people's roles and futures through their genetics. Cagalli Yula Athha, chief representative of the Orb United Emirates, is working to establish a global peace monitoring organization, COMPS, pronounced Compass.
Its temporary base on Onogoro Island receives mobile suits transferred from ZAFT. That night, unknown perpetrators steal the Strike Freedom Gundam. Shinn and his comrades return to combat to recover it and prevent the incident from spreading.
The setting gives the theft a purpose beyond launching another battle. The weapons are being moved while a new peace organization is still taking shape, and its members include people who previously fought on opposing sides. The official synopsis does not identify the thieves, their motives or the wider conflict that follows.
One account describes Cagalli as having already established COMPS, while the official Japanese synopsis places the story during work toward its creation. The character profiles nevertheless say Shinn and Lunamaria have decided to join. Taken together, the official descriptions place ZERO in that transition, with a temporary base operating before the new order is fully settled.
Shinn Has Chosen an Organization, but Not Yet His Direction
Shinn's official profile explains that he lost his family during the invasion of Orb and subsequently joined ZAFT. After being used by Dullindal and fighting against Kira's group, he reconciled with them following the war. In ZERO, he has decided to join COMPS in pursuit of a world without fighting and is training in Orb alongside the Archangel.
That decision does not mean his personal uncertainty has disappeared. The synopsis says he still cannot see which course to follow. The film therefore distinguishes between choosing a new affiliation and understanding what he now wants to protect.
Lunamaria Hawke, his academy contemporary and fellow pilot aboard the Minerva, has also chosen to join COMPS. She continues to train aboard the Archangel and stays close to Shinn. Director Mitsuo Fukuda has explained that ZERO explores parts of their stories that had not been fully depicted.
Kenichi Suzumura, Shinn's Japanese voice actor, described how he approached that uncertainty and the connection to FREEDOM:
Personally, I'd still really love for you to keep an eye on Shinn! I did my best to put his earnest feelings and inner conflict into my voice.
The trailer opens with Shinn and Kira's reconciliation before showing Shinn's doubts and mobile suit action. Its starting point makes clear that the film follows the end of their earlier confrontation, not a return to it.
Chiaki Morosawa's Final Completed Work Reaches the Screen
The screenplay is credited to Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita and Fukuda. It grew out of work undertaken after SEED DESTINY, during planning for SEED FREEDOM. Fukuda identifies it as the final work completed by Morosawa, the series composition writer and his late wife.
In his official statement, Fukuda described both the screenplay's personal meaning and how close he had come to abandoning hopes of seeing it produced:
This is the final work completed by my late wife Chiaki Morosawa, the series composition writer. Until not long ago, I was halfway resigned to the idea that the screenplay might forever remain on the shelf, but now it has been actually made into a film thanks to the ardent support of all the fans.
Fukuda previously said the script had been completed about 20 years earlier and that the project was originally intended as an original video animation, or OVA, a production designed for video release rather than an initial television or theatrical run.
When the prequel was unveiled during special SEED FREEDOM screenings in November 2024, dialogue recording had been completed and storyboards were nearly halfway finished. Some storyboards reportedly predated those for FREEDOM itself. The release format was still undecided at that stage. The January 2027 theatrical date resolves that earlier uncertainty.
Soichiro Hoshi, Kira's Japanese voice actor, separately said recording took place around the time FREEDOM was in theaters. His comment helps explain why the announcement concerns the release of work already recorded, rather than the beginning of voice production.
Leonard Valway Moves From Bonus Fiction to Animation
Daisuke Ono will voice Leonard Valway, who first appeared in the SEED FREEDOM bonus novel Moonlight Valkyrie. ZERO marks Leonard's first appearance in an animated production, and the new trailer includes his voice.
Leonard is a ZAFT academy graduate ranked among its top 10 students, with the red uniform associated with that standing. His Japanese epithet is Funjin no Shishi, a lion epithet associated with his fighting prowess. He visits Orb with Agnes Giebenrath to transfer the Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice Gundams.
Agnes, voiced by Houko Kuwashima, is another academy contemporary of Shinn and an old friend of Lunamaria. Her profile describes her work in military publicity and identifies her as the Moonlight Valkyrie. The trailer shows her with blond hair, a visual difference from her appearance in FREEDOM.
Ono previously played Sven in SEED STARGAZER. In the official English translation of his comment, he contrasted that role with Leonard:
Back then, I voiced Sven, a Natural in the Earth Alliance. This time, I'm playing Leonard, a Coordinator in ZAFT. Having experienced both sides, there's a perspective I can see now that I couldn't before.
In the SEED setting, Coordinators are genetically modified humans, while Naturals are humans without those modifications. The distinction is central to its conflicts and explains the contrast Ono draws between the two roles.
Returning Voices and New Mobile Suit Details
The Japanese cast includes Maaya Sakamoto as Lunamaria, Rie Tanaka as Lacus Clyne, Akira Ishida as Athrun, Nanako Mori as Cagalli and Tomokazu Seki as Yzak Jule. Akira Sasanuma returns as Dearka Elthman, Kotono Mitsuishi as Murrue Ramius and Takehito Koyasu as Mu La Flaga.
The trailer also shows Yzak angrily addressing Athrun through a screen. Alongside the central theft plot, that exchange brings back the familiar friction between returning characters. Ishida said the film would address what happened between DESTINY and FREEDOM, although the announcement does not reveal how each character's story fits into the incident.
Strike Freedom and Infinite Justice return, joined by the new GOUF Ignited Custom. Other revealed designs include the Murasame Kai initial production type, along with GOUF Ignited units associated with Agnes and Leonard. Mobile suits are the setting's piloted combat machines.
The production credits name Sunrise for planning and production, Hisashi Hirai for character design and chief animation direction, Satoshi Shigeta for chief mechanical animation direction and Toshihiko Sahashi for music. Bandai Namco Filmworks produces the film and distributes it in Japan with Shochiku.
Two Advance Tickets, Different Benefits
Japanese advance sales begin on October 16, 2026. Both the first MoviTicket card and the online advance ticket cost 1,900 yen including tax, but their bonuses are separate.
The physical card comes with an A5 clear file using the teaser visual, while supplies last. Participating theaters begin sales when they open, and online card sales begin at 10 a.m. Each card purchase receives one clear file until the stock is exhausted, after which cards may continue to be sold without it.
The electronic ticket, sold through MOVIE WALKER STORE, comes with a code for one Premium Gasha Ticket in SD Gundam G Generation Eternal. Online sales run from 10 a.m. on October 16 through 11:59 p.m. on January 14, 2027. The electronic ticket does not include the physical card's clear file.
Online ticket holders who attend from January 15 through January 17 receive a special visual digital MoviTicket card by email after viewing. From January 18, the viewing bonus changes to a main visual digital card. These benefits apply to the online ticket, not automatically to every admission during the opening weekend.
The game bonus is limited to one redemption per game account, even if someone obtains several promotional codes. Codes expire on January 31, 2028. A second advance ticket release is planned, but its details have not been announced. Both ticket types may be excluded from stage greetings or special screenings with different prices.
A Vote Across 287 Scenes Will Shape Admission Gifts
The SEED Series Grand Prix 2026 asks fans to choose memorable moments involving 55 characters across SEED, SEED DESTINY and SEED FREEDOM. Its 287 eligible scenes make it a ranking of character moments, rather than a simple popularity contest between characters.
The Japanese voting period runs from October 9 through November 30, 2026. The English announcement gives October 8 through November 30 in Pacific Daylight Time. The opening dates reflect the different time zones used by the two announcements; fans should follow the deadline displayed on their regional voting page.
The published voting limits differ more substantially. The English announcement says fans may vote once per character per day. The Japanese release says each person may vote once daily, with voting resetting at 10 a.m. Those descriptions should not be treated as identical rules.
Results are scheduled for December 2026. Leading scenes will inspire newly drawn illustrations for ZERO admission gifts, but the number of winning scenes, final designs and distribution schedule are still to be announced.

GUNDAM-Con will occupy halls 1 through 3 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. On January 10, Suzumura, Ono, Seki and Fukuda are scheduled for a ZERO panel from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. On January 11, Hoshi, Tanaka and Suzumura are scheduled for a FREEDOM and ZERO panel from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., both on Stage A.
The convention's second ticket lottery has an October 12, 2026 deadline. Scheduled speakers may change, and successful applicants must pay by the stated deadline to retain their tickets.
Music, Models and a Separate Side Story
Sahashi's ZERO soundtrack arrives on January 15, 2027. The standard CD costs 3,300 yen including tax, while the initial limited edition costs 4,400 yen and includes a microfiber handkerchief and slipcase. Initial pressings include a 2027 calendar card. A limited vinyl edition containing two records follows on February 24 for 8,800 yen.
The model schedule starts with the HG 1/144 Murasame Kai initial production type in December 2026 for 2,970 yen. An HG Infinite Justice Gundam and Booster Unit, whose product name is provisional, follows in February 2027 for 4,070 yen. It includes a newly sculpted large booster and shield. The HG GOUF Ignited Custom is planned for April at 3,190 yen.
A METAL ROBOT Spirits Infinite Justice Gundam ZERO version is scheduled for January at 19,800 yen. Its features include a newly sculpted head, the new Hayato no Tate shield and beam effect parts.
The separate official side story SEED FREEDOM MSV begins in Hobby Japan's December 2026 issue, which goes on sale October 23. A Rising Freedom Gundam Radiance Granger figure tied to MSV will receive advance sales at GUNDAM-Con in January for 26,400 yen, with later sales planned. Details of that machine's story are still to come.
An Ichiban Kuji lottery is also planned for January at 800 yen per entry, with Shinn, Lunamaria and Leonard figures among its prizes. A separate fan advertising program permits celebratory SEED advertisements during January 1 through December 31, 2027.
A Prequel Following a Record Theatrical Run
FREEDOM set the Gundam franchise's Japanese theatrical earnings record. Its first three days brought 634,182 admissions and 1,065,983,130 yen, before cumulative revenue passed 5 billion yen. The opening receipts therefore represent less than 21.4% of that later total, showing how much revenue followed the initial weekend.
ZERO enters theaters with that successful predecessor behind it, but its purpose is different: to explain the transition into FREEDOM through Shinn's uncertainty, COMPS' formation and a stolen weapon. Its screenplay's long development also separates it from a story conceived only after the 2024 film's box office success.
The immediate unanswered matters are practical and narrative. North America's exact release date and theater list remain unannounced, while Japan awaits the second ticket release and admission gift details. The thieves and their motives remain undisclosed. The confirmed January premiere, February release window and December voting results provide the next firm milestones.
