A scarce console before a huge game launch
The PS5 Pro was sold out at five major US retailers in a November 3, 2026 stock check, despite its $899.99 price, as players prepared for Grand Theft Auto VI downloads to begin on November 10. Amazon, Best Buy, Target, GameStop and PlayStation Direct all lacked new units at the official retail price.

Rockstar Games says GTA VI launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with downloads requiring up to 212 GB depending on the device. Sony's PlayStation page gives PS5 owners a firmer preparation target: clear at least 212 GB before downloading.
Resellers have advertised refurbished consoles and units from independent sellers for $1,399 to more than $1,600. At $1,399, the asking price is about $499 above the official price, a premium of roughly 55%. Former X executive Nikita Bier said he had spent two weeks trying unsuccessfully to find a PS5 Pro.
The buying pressure comes after Sony raised the console's price by $200 in April. Yet the shortage is concentrated in the Pro model: standard PS5 consoles and most Xbox Series X|S models remained available at or near their official prices during the same retail check.
For people who simply want to play GTA VI, that difference matters. PlayStation confirms the game is coming to both PS5 and PS5 Pro. An expensive upgrade is optional, while enough storage and access to a supported console are the practical requirements.
When downloads and play begin
Rockstar's preload announcement sets different starting rules for the two console platforms. PS5 downloads begin at midnight local time on November 10. Xbox Series X|S downloads begin worldwide at 12 a.m. GMT that day, so the local clock time will vary by country.
PlayStation's GTA VI page confirms November 10, 2026 at local midnight for customers who have preordered. Preloading means downloading the files before release; players still wait until the game unlocks on November 19 to start playing.
The main dates stretch across more than two weeks:
- November 5: Rockstar published The Launch Gallery, showing protagonists Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in Leonida.
- November 10: Digital preloading begins on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- November 12: Rockstar expects retailers to begin stocking versions containing a download code in a box.
- November 18: A Miami Heat game against the Milwaukee Bucks is scheduled to carry Vice City Heat branding.
- November 19: GTA VI launches, and Rockstar plans to release a free printable poster and Leonida map.
The game is scheduled to unlock at midnight local time on November 19, putting players in Australia and New Zealand ahead of those in the United States. No PC release date has been announced.
Why the storage instructions need care
Rockstar describes the download size as a maximum that varies by device. Its announcement says:
The pre-load file will require up to 212 GB depending on your device, so make sure you've got ample space to begin pre-loading as soon as possible.
PlayStation tells PS5 owners to clear a minimum of 212 GB. Taken together, the instructions give a straightforward plan: PS5 customers should make that much room, while Xbox customers should check the requirement displayed for their device when the download becomes available.
A file of that size can take hours to download, depending on connection speed and other internet use in the home. Starting early gives players nine days between the announced preload date and release, rather than leaving the entire transfer until launch night.
Some published guidance has cited Rockstar Support wording giving November 12 as the download start and November 10 for boxed codes. Rockstar's announcement and PlayStation's page instead specify November 10 for digital preloading, while Rockstar puts expected retail availability of boxed codes on November 12. Customers waiting for a boxed version will need to receive and redeem its code before downloading.
What is driving the PS5 Pro squeeze?
Best Buy briefly restocked the PS5 Pro in late October, but those units sold out quickly. By November 3, the model was unavailable at the five major retailers checked, leaving buyers to monitor new stock or consider much higher resale prices.
Sony raised console prices on April 2, citing pressure in the global economy. Microsoft increased Xbox prices in August amid rising memory chip costs associated with demand from artificial intelligence companies. Memory is used in both consoles and computing equipment, placing different industries in competition for components.
Sony has reportedly told distribution partners that temporary supply constraints and high demand would limit console stock until the following year. That would carry the pressure beyond GTA VI's launch and the Black Friday shopping period.
Retailers have also used lotteries to allocate scarce PS5 Pro units. In Japan, Sony introduced a purchase rule requiring 60 hours of play history, an attempt to keep consoles away from scalpers who buy stock to resell at higher prices.
Buyers face two pressures at once: Sony's official price has risen, and scarce stock gives resellers room to ask even more. A listing above $1,600 would put the console more than $700 beyond its $899.99 retail price, before any taxes or other charges.
Other ways to play remain cheaper
The standard PS5 with a disc drive was available at most retailers checked on November 3 for around $649.99, although Amazon was sold out. The PS5 Digital Edition was available from several sellers for about $599.99, with no new stock at Amazon or GameStop.
Those prices put the standard disc model $250 below the PS5 Pro and the Digital Edition $300 below it. Both belong to the PS5 platform confirmed for GTA VI, giving buyers alternatives without paying the Pro's retail premium or a reseller's markup.
Xbox Series X with a disc drive was available at most major sellers for around $799.99, although Target and Microsoft's own store were sold out. The digital Series X was generally available around $749.99, while Series S models were listed around $499.99 for 512 GB and $599.99 for 1 TB.
Xbox head Asha Sharma has said demand for Xbox consoles exceeds supply. The retail check nevertheless found most models available somewhere at their official prices. Availability varied by seller, making the choice of retailer important as well as the choice of console.
PlayStation labels GTA VI as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Rockstar has yet to specify the meaningful performance differences between PS5 and PS5 Pro, including frame rates and graphics settings. Buyers considering the extra expense therefore still lack those details.
A trade offer comes with conditions
Sony has been directing US PS5 owners to Back Market for a trade offer advertised around a $400 cash payment. At that amount, selling an existing console would bring the net cost of a PS5 Pro purchased at $899.99 to $499.99, before tax.
The $400 figure is an average quote for a standard PS5 in flawless condition with at least two controllers. Back Market inspects the console before confirming the final payment, so the amount depends on its condition and what the seller includes.
A flawless standard PS5 with one controller has also attracted a quoted valuation of $435. The difference between individual quotes and the advertised average makes the final inspection especially relevant to anyone budgeting for an upgrade.
Back Market pays into a nominated bank account rather than issuing store credit. Owners must arrange the PS5 Pro purchase separately, and the payment does not secure a replacement console. With Pro stock scarce, selling an existing PS5 before finding another could leave a player without a console for launch.
Sony earns more while selling fewer consoles
Sony sold 2.6 million PS5 consoles in the quarter described as Q2 2026, compared with 4 million a year earlier. That is a decline of 1.4 million units, or 35%, even as the gaming business reported higher revenue and profit.
Gaming revenue rose 9% and profit increased 83% from the same period a year earlier. Game sales grew by 9.8 million units, while PlayStation Network services revenue increased 19.5% to 218.3 billion yen.
Digital downloads represented 78% of full game software sales, compared with 72% a year earlier, a rise of six percentage points. Sony's existing console owners can keep generating software and service revenue even when the company has fewer new machines to sell.
Sony reported cumulative PS5 sales of 97.9 million units. That large customer base gives a major release such as GTA VI a substantial audience beyond people buying their first console or upgrading to a Pro.
Investors watch the launch closely
Sony raised its net profit forecast for the financial year ending March 2027 to a record 1.33 trillion yen. Its shares gained about 7% during the week described in the market coverage before giving back part of those gains on Friday.
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, also faces a major commercial test after its shares declined during the year. GTA VI's launch will bring the first sales results against which investors can assess the enormous expectations surrounding the game.
Estimates of advance purchases range from about $750 million to nearly $1 billion, with the higher estimate associated with roughly 8 million copies. Rockstar has not confirmed those figures. Confirmed sales totals will give a firmer measure of how much demand has turned into purchases.
Sony's opportunity extends across hardware, game purchases and network services. Take-Two's depends more directly on the game's commercial performance. For Sony, stock shortages could restrict new console sales during the launch period, even while millions of existing PS5 owners remain able to buy the game.
Vice City reaches beyond the console
Rockstar's November 5 Launch Gallery placed Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos across Leonida, the game's setting, as the company expanded its promotion ahead of release. The official site also carries an extended gameplay look, radio station previews and music from Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album.
Miami is central to the promotional campaign. The November 18 Heat game against the Milwaukee Bucks is scheduled to use Vice City Heat branding, alongside a Vice City blimp and nightclubs carrying GTA themes.
Rockstar says a printable cover art poster and map of Leonida will be available as free digital downloads on November 19. A physical poster printed on both sides is planned shortly after launch, priced at $0.99 on its own or included free with a Rockstar Store purchase.
The immediate decisions for players are more practical: find a supported console at an acceptable price, clear enough storage and check when the download becomes available. The official schedule gives digital buyers nine days to prepare, while the PS5 Pro shortage makes waiting for that particular model a separate purchasing decision.
