A first Big Bash contract and a special place for supporters
Mustafizur Rahman has signed with Melbourne Renegades for the 2026-27 Big Bash League, bringing 423 wickets from 331 T20 matches to a team replacing injured Australian seamer Jason Behrendorff. The Bangladesh bowler's arrival also comes with a plan for supporters: a dedicated Fizz Bay at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, with a 50 percent discount on family tickets for the first 200 spots.

The 31-year-old left arm fast bowler is preparing for his first appearance in Australia's domestic T20 competition after playing in franchise leagues across several countries. He would become the third Bangladesh cricketer to play in the BBL, following Shakib Al Hasan and Rishad Hossain.
Melbourne's decision brings together two priorities. Coach Luke Ronchi wants a bowler who can take wickets at the beginning and end of an innings. General manager Max Abbott wants to welcome Bangladesh supporters into the Renegades' new home at the MCG, after the club's 16 seasons at Marvel Stadium.
Mustafizur is expected to miss the opening match against Perth Scorchers in Chennai on December 12. His absence has been attributed to ILT20 commitments and, alternatively, Bangladesh's tour of South Africa. December 22 against Sydney Sixers has been identified as a possible debut, with his exact arrival and first appearance still to be confirmed.
For Melbourne, the signing therefore means an experienced replacement for a missing bowler, a possible early wait for his services and a new effort to turn the enthusiasm of Bangladesh supporters into a regular presence in the stands.
Why Melbourne moved for Mustafizur
Behrendorff will miss the BBL's 16th season because of a shoulder injury requiring surgery. His absence left the Renegades looking for another bowler who delivers with his left arm, while also increasing their need for someone trusted to bowl near the end of an innings.
Abbott said Mustafizur had been on the club's shortlist from the beginning. Behrendorff's injury accelerated the pursuit because Mustafizur offered the combination Melbourne wanted: a different bowling angle, experience and the ability to operate when batters are trying to score quickly.
Ronchi, the Renegades' new head coach, described the sporting reasons for signing him in a club statement.
Mustafizur is a proven match-winner in T20 cricket all over the world," Ronchi said. "His ability to take wickets in both the powerplay and at the death is exactly what we wanted in our attack.
Abbott also said the club's analysts rated Mustafizur highly for bowling at the end of an innings. His assessment explains why Melbourne pursued a specialist in that role rather than choosing a replacement solely because he bowls with the same arm as Behrendorff.
What his bowling brings to the attack
Mustafizur is known for slower deliveries and cutters, balls released with changes in pace or finger movement that can make them behave differently from an ordinary fast delivery. A batter expecting the ball to arrive quickly may swing too early when it comes more slowly.
T20 innings last a maximum of 20 overs, with six legal deliveries in each over. The powerplay is the opening period, when fielding restrictions give batters more room to attack. The death overs are the closing stages, when teams usually take greater risks to increase their score.
Ronchi's comments point to a demanding assignment in both periods. Melbourne wants wickets while opponents are starting aggressively and again when they are trying to finish strongly. Mustafizur's changes of pace give the captain another option in those situations.
His career figures amount to about 1.28 wickets per T20 appearance, calculated from 423 wickets in 331 matches. He has also taken 121 wickets across nine Bangladesh Premier League seasons. Those BPL wickets represent roughly 29 percent of his stated T20 total, showing how much of his experience has come outside that competition.
The MCG becomes part of the attraction
Mustafizur's first BBL contract coincides with a change of home ground for the Renegades. Abbott said the club was moving to the Melbourne Cricket Ground after 16 years at Marvel Stadium.
The MCG can accommodate more than 100,000 spectators. For Mustafizur, the prospect of calling the ground home was a central part of his reaction to the signing.
Mustafizur, speaking in the club statement about joining Melbourne, described his excitement at playing there.
I am looking forward to playing in the BBL for the first time with the Melbourne Renegades," Mustafizur said. "It will be special to play at the MCG as my home ground and I'm excited to join my team-mates and bring my experience to the squad.
Melbourne has also signed England's Jonny Bairstow and New Zealand's Michael Bracewell as international players. Mustafizur adds a specialist pace bowling option alongside those recruits, giving Ronchi another experienced player as he takes charge.
How the Fizz Bay ticket offer will work
Abbott announced that a section of the MCG would be set aside for Mustafizur's supporters under the Fizz Bay name, drawn from the bowler's nickname, the Fizz. The plan is aimed at Bangladesh families living in Melbourne as well as visitors who want to watch him together.
The offer is a 50 percent discount on family tickets for the first 200 spots in the designated section, using the promotional code FIZZBAY. The advertised Fizz Bay fixtures are the January 1 match against Sydney Sixers and the January 16 derby against Melbourne Stars; January 4 has also been given as the Stars fixture date.
Abbott said the club could expand the section if demand was strong. Supporters would be welcome in Bangladesh shirts, Renegades clothing or other outfits of their choice, making the area a shared gathering place rather than requiring everyone to wear the same team's colours.
The discount gives families a concrete reason to attend together, while the dedicated section offers a place to meet other supporters. Its limited allocation also makes the ticket promotion a distinct part of the club's wider effort to welcome Mustafizur's following.
The dates shaping his first season
The Renegades' opening fixture is scheduled for December 12 against Perth Scorchers at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. It is described as the first BBL match to be played in India, taking the Australian competition to a ground already familiar to Mustafizur.
Chennai was his home venue while playing for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. His expected absence means his Renegades debut may instead come against Sydney Sixers on December 22.
The main dates announced around his signing and the supporter initiative are:
- December 12: Renegades are scheduled to open against Perth Scorchers in Chennai, with Mustafizur expected to be unavailable.
- December 22: A match against Sydney Sixers has been identified as a possible BBL debut for Mustafizur.
- January 1: Renegades are scheduled to host Sydney Sixers at the MCG, with a Fizz Bay ticket offer.
- January 16: The Fizz Bay announcement lists the MCG derby against Melbourne Stars for this date, although January 4 has also been given for the fixture.
Melbourne's expectation of having Mustafizur for much of the tournament gives Ronchi an experienced option beyond the opening fixture. His arrival timing will determine when the team can first put that plan into practice.
A wider Bangladesh presence in the BBL
Shakib Al Hasan played for the Renegades in the 2014-15 season, giving Mustafizur a Bangladesh connection to his new club. Rishad Hossain has since represented Hobart Hurricanes and has been retained by the team after attracting support from Bangladesh spectators during his previous campaign.
Abbott pointed to substantial Bangladesh communities in Melbourne and Sydney as a reason to expect support for Mustafizur at home and away. He also said interest on the club's social media platforms had increased after news emerged that the bowler could be joining.
Mustafizur brings experience from the Bangladesh Premier League, Indian Premier League, England's T20 Blast, Pakistan Super League, International League T20 and Lanka Premier League. The BBL adds another major competition to that career.
The wider league is also seeing changes among its international players. Pakistan fast bowler Haris Rauf has signed with Adelaide Strikers after a long association with Melbourne Stars. Mustafizur's arrival is another change to the pace bowling talent available across the competition.
What Melbourne wants from the signing
Ronchi's immediate task is to replace Behrendorff's contribution with a bowler who can handle difficult overs. Mustafizur's record and variations explain the choice, while the possible delay to his debut means Melbourne must begin its season without the new recruit.
Abbott's plans extend into the stands. A dedicated section, a family discount and permission for supporters to wear Bangladesh colours give the club a specific way to welcome a community already following its new player.
Mustafizur's first BBL season therefore carries two practical tests for the Renegades: fitting his bowling into the attack once he arrives, and turning interest in an individual player into attendance at their new home ground.
