The company is targeting television and cinema work with sharper images, more detailed facial expressions and better preservation of reference material. Approximately 20 productions are participating, including a major international film franchise and a television project expected to reach viewers as early as November.
Seedance 2.5 4K also introduces a practical way to manage the cost of repeated attempts: creators can generate a rough version at 480p, refine the shot, then generate the selected version at 4K. That workflow puts cheaper experimentation before the most demanding rendering stage.
Access remains limited to invited customers. Volcano Engine has not announced a date for general access to the 4K version or published a full pricing schedule. The commercial API access already available for Seedance 2.5 belongs to the broader model rollout, while this new version is entering a narrower production trial.
The immediate change is therefore specific: selected filmmakers have another tool for developing and generating individual shots. Clips remain limited to 30 seconds, and completing a feature still requires people to select material, edit scenes and assemble a coherent film.
What changes between 1080p and 4K?
Seedance 2.5 previously generated video at resolutions up to 1080p. The new version moves to 4K, giving filmmakers more room to show textures, outlines and small visual details on a large screen.
For common television formats, 1080p measures 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, while 4K measures 3,840 by 2,160. That means four times as many pixels, the tiny picture elements that form an image. Details such as fabric, hair and objects in the background have more space to appear distinctly.
Volcano Engine also describes support for 10-bit color depth. In simple terms, color depth controls how many shades an image can represent. Ten bits allow 1,024 levels for each color channel, compared with 256 at eight bits, helping gradual changes in skies, shadows and lighting appear smoother.
The company says dedicated training has improved the model's handling of expressions, subtle movement and visual detail, making it the strongest version in the Seedance 2.5 generation. Its pitch combines higher resolution with changes to what happens inside the frame, especially how characters react.
Small reactions become a production priority
Volcano Engine says tests with film and television customers showed fuller depictions of subtle reactions in dramatic scenes. The intended benefit is easier recognition of emotions that are conveyed through a face or movement rather than spoken dialogue.
A scene can depend on a brief hesitation, a glance or a slight change in expression. Those details help viewers follow a character's feelings without needing an explanation. The company's focus on this kind of performance reflects the demands of sustained storytelling, where an attractive image must also carry meaning.
The trial is directed at high quality film and television production, including work before final filming and editing. Production and postproduction companies in China and overseas have already tried the model. Postproduction covers work after footage is created, such as editing, visual effects and color adjustment.
The early participants and their productions have not been publicly identified in detail. Descriptions of the trial include a major global film franchise and a prominent television property, but there are no published results showing how much generated footage will appear in their finished releases.
Why reference images and small text matter
Volcano Engine says Seedance 2.5 4K better preserves the clarity, color and visual quality of uploaded material during reference generation and video editing. Reference generation uses an existing image or clip to guide the appearance of newly generated footage.
For a production team, that can mean keeping a character, setting or object recognizable as it moves between shots. A director may want a new camera angle or action while retaining the look already chosen for the scene.
Posters and product packaging are among the examples highlighted by the company. Small lettering in those materials is said to remain clearer and more legible. This matters when a shot contains an object whose design needs to stay readable, rather than becoming an indistinct pattern.
The same concern applies to color. If a reference image establishes a particular costume or setting, changes during generation can create extra correction work. Volcano Engine is presenting preservation of those details as part of the model's suitability for large screens, where mistakes are easier to notice.
Draft mode puts cheaper experiments first
Seedance 2.5 4K supports Draft mode, allowing users to test storyboards and refine shots with 480p samples before generating a final version at 4K. A storyboard is a sequence of planned images showing how a scene will unfold.
Under this approach, a team can work through composition and action at a lower resolution, then spend more on the shots it chooses to keep. The distinction matters because creative work often involves repeated attempts before a director settles on a result.
A participating film studio described the pricing as lower than it had expected and pointed to the ability to generate samples first, then regenerate selected shots at 4K. No exact charges were disclosed, so the cost of a finished scene cannot yet be calculated from the trial information.
The workflow also separates two decisions that are easily mixed together: whether a shot works creatively and whether it has enough detail for delivery. Draft mode addresses the first decision at lower cost; the 4K stage supplies the intended final image quality.
How the rollout reached this point
Seedance 2.5 moved through several access stages before the 4K trial. The earlier rollout opened routes for enterprise customers, developers and consumers, while the latest release concentrates on selected film productions.
- June 23: Seedance 2.5 was first introduced at the FORCE conference.
- July 13: API access opened to leading enterprise customers.
- July 16: API access expanded to ordinary developers.
- July 31: Consumer access arrived through the Jimeng website and mobile app.
- August 7: Commercial API access formally opened.
- September 27: Volcano Engine announced its Seedance Film and Television Cooperation Plan at the Pingyao International Film Festival.
- October 22: The first enterprise trials of Seedance 2.5 4K began.
- October 23: The 4K release was announced, with the earliest participating television work expected in November.
An API is a connection that lets developers use a model inside their own software. Opening commercial API access makes it possible for businesses to build services around the model, while a production trial lets the supplier work with a smaller group on specific uses.
Volcano Engine's September cooperation plan offered up to 1 million yuan in token subsidies per project. Tokens are units used to measure model usage; a subsidy can help cover the computing work involved in generating material. In June, the company also entered an AI video copyright cooperation with Boke Group, which is associated with Stephen Chow.
A theatrical release shows the work still required
The 4K launch comes as China's AI film sector begins testing whether generated features can attract paying cinema audiences. On October 23, Bona Film Group's Sanxingdui: Past of the Future opened in Chinese theaters as a film described as the country's first AI hyperrealistic feature to receive a theatrical distribution license. It was registered as an animated film.
The 100 minute production offers a useful comparison for the scale of work beyond generating individual clips. Its team spent nearly two years exploring the technology, generated more than 1.2 million base images and carried out hundreds of iterations of the full film. Nearly 100 people worked across 17 professional divisions, including cinematography, lighting and art.
Quji Xiaojiang, head of Bona's AIGMS Production Center, put the production cost in the tens of millions of yuan. He estimated that making the film through conventional live action could have cost 800 million to 900 million yuan. Those are the production executive's estimates, rather than a published accounting of savings.
The film also underwent more than 100 minor adjustments after its September 2025 submission for review. A newer model prompted another visual upgrade after the production had obtained its release license. Faster generation still left substantial work in choosing images, maintaining characters and connecting shots.
Better images still need an audience
Sanxingdui's early ticket demand was modest. Before release, fewer than 6,000 users had marked an interest in watching it on Maoyan, compared with about 17,600 on Taopiaopiao. Combined presales were about 144,000 yuan.
Beacon Professional Edition forecast an opening day box office of 311,000 yuan and a total of 2.169 million yuan. Those figures were forecasts at release, with final box office results still to come. Against a production cost described as tens of millions of yuan, they pointed to a difficult commercial start.
For Seedance 2.5 4K customers, the practical test will take place inside productions: how much usable footage they obtain, how often shots need another attempt and how much editing remains. A model's price per generation is only one part of that calculation. Staff time and the number of discarded versions also affect the cost of a finished scene.
Volcano Engine is pursuing uses beyond entertainment as well. The Seedance series is being used in embodied intelligence, which concerns AI systems acting through physical machines, and in manufacturing simulations. The new 4K trial, however, has a narrower immediate goal: placing generated shots into professional film and television workflows.
A 30 second clip is one part of a film
Seedance 2.5 4K's 30 second limit keeps its immediate role centered on individual shots or short sequences. Editors must still combine those pieces, manage pacing and make characters and settings consistent across a longer story.
The invited trial gives Volcano Engine a way to test sharper images, more natural reactions and reference preservation against real production requirements. The first television projects expected in November will be an early opportunity to see how participating teams use the model in finished work.
For now, the release expands the tools available to a small group of filmmakers. Its clearest practical change is the combination of inexpensive draft generation and a higher resolution finishing stage, with people still responsible for turning the resulting clips into a film.
