China's 2026 Box Office Passes 31 Billion Yuan as Domestic Films Expand Abroad

Eight domestic films occupy the annual top ten

China's 2026 cinema box office exceeded 31 billion yuan, including advance ticket sales, by October 11. Eight domestic productions occupied the annual top ten, while nine films had each earned more than 1 billion yuan. The milestone comes as Chinese releases announce screenings across Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania, and cinemas experiment with museum partnerships, retail discounts and live tennis broadcasts.

The annual revenue threshold follows a National Day holiday that generated 1.165 billion yuan and 31.9959 million admissions, according to the China Film Administration. Domestic films accounted for 78.7% of holiday ticket revenue. Those figures show the strength of Chinese productions within the market, although a rising annual total does not by itself establish that cinema attendance or revenue is growing compared with 2025.

The eight domestic films named among the annual leaders were Feichi Rensheng 3, Huan Ying Lai Long Can Guan, Gong Fu Nu Zu, Ba Xian!, Gei A Ma De Qing Shu, Biao Ren: Feng Qi Da Mo, Jing Zhe Wu Sheng and Xiong Chu Mo: Nian Nian You Xiong. These romanized Chinese titles avoid assuming that every production has an established English release title.

More than 400 films across comedy, action, science fiction, suspense and animation had contributed to the year's release schedule. Alongside ticket sales, an estimate put output across the wider film industry chain above 480 billion yuan. That much larger number describes a different measure of economic activity, not money collected at cinema ticket counters.

What the October milestones actually measure

The progression from 30 billion yuan on October 3 to more than 31 billion yuan on October 11 provides a useful sequence, but both thresholds include advance sales. Tickets bought for future screenings can enter such totals before the audience attends. The figures therefore should not be treated as a count of revenue from completed screenings alone.

A separate October 7 reading placed annual revenue at 30.746 billion yuan and admissions at 784 million. The October 3 figures were 763 million admissions and 112 million screenings. The increase of approximately 21 million admissions between those readings helps show the holiday's contribution to cinema activity, although the totals are rounded.

The main reporting dates were:

  • February 24, 9 a.m.: The China Film Administration recorded annual revenue of 8.335 billion yuan and Spring Festival revenue of 5.752 billion yuan.
  • October 3: Annual revenue, including advance sales, exceeded 30 billion yuan; National Day revenue, also including advance sales, exceeded 400 million yuan.
  • October 7: Annual revenue was reported at 30.746 billion yuan, with 784 million admissions.
  • October 9: The administration published its completed National Day holiday figures.
  • October 11: Annual revenue, including advance sales, exceeded 31 billion yuan.

These are successive snapshots rather than conflicting accounts of the same moment. None is a completed annual result, and the October 11 milestone does not establish a final total for 2026.

National Day delivered steady daily revenue, not a broad recovery

The China Film Administration's National Day statistics, published on October 9, recorded 1.165 billion yuan in revenue, with daily takings exceeding 100 million yuan for seven consecutive days. Admissions reached 31.9959 million.

The holiday's leading films were Shen Tan Zhi Hen Ji, Shen Me Yi Si Fu Fu, Sheng Hua Wei Ji: Bao Fa Ye, Huan Ying Lai Long Can Guan and Xiao Zhu Pei Qi: Wan Mei Jia Qi. English accounts use different names for some of these titles: the leading crime film appears as both Traces of Justice and Sherlock of China, while the second film is called Mr. & Mrs. Pardon. These naming differences should not be mistaken for separate films.

Reported holiday grosses for the top three were 423 million yuan, 244 million yuan and 174 million yuan. Together, they earned 841 million yuan, approximately 72.2% of the official holiday total. That concentration shows how much the market depended on a small group of releases, even with a varied programme available.

The completed National Day tally also showed a weaker market than in 2025: revenue fell from 1.835 billion yuan during an eight day break to 1.165 billion yuan during seven days. Average daily revenue declined from approximately 229 million yuan to 166 million yuan, about 27.4%. The shorter holiday explains part of the reduction, but not all of it.

Spring Festival shows how strongly one film can lead

The China Film Administration's Spring Festival statistics put holiday revenue at 5.752 billion yuan as of February 24 at 9 a.m., with 120 million admissions. Average ticket prices were 6% lower than a year earlier. At that reporting point, annual cinema revenue stood at 8.335 billion yuan.

Feichi Rensheng 3 earned 2.927 billion yuan during the Spring Festival period, approximately 50.9% of the entire holiday total. Jing Zhe Wu Sheng followed with 868 million yuan, Biao Ren: Feng Qi Da Mo with 806 million yuan and Xiong Chu Mo: Nian Nian You Xiong with 714 million yuan. All four remained among the domestic productions named in the annual top ten in October.

Other Spring Festival releases earned smaller amounts: Xiong Mao Ji Hua Zhi Bu Luo Qi Yu Ji collected 193 million yuan, Xing He Ru Meng 80.5796 million yuan and Ye Wang 72.454 million yuan. The figures illustrate a wide gap between the leading title and the rest of the programme.

Spring Festival revenue was approximately 4.94 times the National Day total, using the administration's figures. The holiday periods and reporting cutoffs differ, so this is a comparison of their recorded scale, not a precise measure of relative daily demand.

Overseas releases have specific October dates

Several domestic successes, including Gei A Ma De Qing Shu, Ba Xian! and Huan Ying Lai Long Can Guan, have been reaching overseas cinemas. The next announced releases give a more concrete picture of international distribution than the annual domestic ranking alone.

Shen Tan Zhi Hen Ji plans to open in Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Germany on October 15, followed by Malaysia on October 22. Its schedule calls for cinema releases in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand by the end of October. South Korea, Japan, Thailand and Cambodia are also listed, without specific opening dates.

Chong Sheng 2 has announced openings in Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia on October 15, alongside advance screenings in the United Kingdom. Its regular release in the United Kingdom and Ireland is scheduled for October 16, followed by the United States and Canada on October 23. Shen Me Yi Si Fu Fu has also announced forthcoming releases in North America, Australia and New Zealand, but without dates.

These schedules establish where and when audiences are expected to gain access to the films. They do not establish overseas commercial success: international ticket revenue, admissions, cinema counts and the duration of each release have not been stated.

An Oscar submission is separate from a nomination

The producers of Huan Ying Lai Long Can Guan announced that the film would represent mainland China in the competition for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards. The title appears in an English holiday box office account as Once Upon a Time in the Middle East.

A country's submission enters the Academy's selection process. It is not the same as making a shortlist or receiving a nomination. The announcement therefore represents an awards campaign and an opportunity for international attention, rather than an Oscar result.

The film also links several parts of the current market: it is named among the annual domestic leaders, appears in the National Day top five and has reached overseas audiences. No Academy selection outcome or subsequent decision date is established here.

More screens do not automatically mean fuller cinemas

Figures attributed to the China Film Administration show that China added a net 438 cinemas and 2,632 screens through the end of September, bringing the nationwide screen total to 95,819. Subtracting the net additions gives a starting base of 93,187 screens, making the increase approximately 2.8%.

During National Day, cinemas offered approximately 3.29 million screenings, reported as 2.2% more than a year earlier. Average ticket prices were 36.41 yuan, down 0.28 yuan, or 0.77%. More screenings and slightly cheaper tickets did not prevent holiday revenue from falling.

At roughly 32 million admissions across 3.29 million screenings, the holiday averaged about 9.7 admissions per screening. This is not an occupancy rate, because auditorium sizes are not given, but it helps distinguish the amount of programming available from the number of visits that programming attracted.

Cinemas have also been promoting IMAX and CINITY presentations, which use specialized projection and sound systems. Shen Tan Zhi Hen Ji offered an IMAX version, while Chong Sheng 2 was promoted for action sequences in premium auditoriums. Such formats can distinguish a cinema visit from watching at home, but no separate revenue figures establish their contribution to the annual milestone.

Museums, books and tennis extend the cinema business

The reported 480 billion yuan estimate for the film industry chain sits alongside practical attempts to connect screenings with other spending. Its calculation method, boundaries and detailed components have not been disclosed. It should not be described as cinema revenue, industry profit or a measured contribution to national economic output.

In Shenyang, Liaoning province, a cultural itinerary connects the Liaoning Provincial Museum, the Liaoning Science and Technology Museum and an evening screening at an IMAX GT auditorium. The cinema becomes one stop in a day of museum visits rather than an isolated destination.

In Qingdao, Shandong province, the Lao Sheng Yin Qing Huai Guan collection venue has introduced China Film screening resources, showing Gei A Ma De Qing Shu and De Xian Jin Zhi. Visitors can then view historic radios, record players, tapes and vinyl records. Its collections include audiovisual objects dating from the 1950s and recreated household appliance shop settings from the 1980s and 1990s.

In Beijing, an activity marking the 90th anniversary of the Red Army's Long March connects visits to the Museum of the Communist Party of China with Long March themed screenings at the nearby Tian Tian Zhong Ying Hui cinema. In Shenzhen's Nanshan district, cinema businesses have added reading spaces, scalp care services and esports areas. Another cinema partnership offers discounts on selected books at seven Shenzhen book centres to customers presenting movie ticket stubs.

Before National Day, Huaxia Film's Chao Xian Chang programme partnered with more than 100 cinemas to broadcast the 2026 China Open tennis tournament live on cinema screens. It was described as the first such cinema presentation of the tournament. Attendance, broadcast ticket prices and revenue were not disclosed, leaving its commercial scale unquantified.

Why the annual rankings need caution

Reports differ on the annual leaders. A separate ranking lists Once Upon a Time in the Middle East first at $349.9 million, Kung Fu Soccer second at $323,437,173, All Wishes Come True! third at $302.2 million and Dear You fourth at $285.2 million. Its listed top ten does not match the set of films named in the October 11 account.

That ranking also contains two entries titled V with different grosses and release dates, and an entry for Zootopia 2 dated November 26 without specifying the year in the excerpt. No common reporting cutoff or explanation of its coverage is given. Its dollar figures therefore cannot be reconciled reliably with the October yuan totals, and it should not replace them.

The distinction matters because eight domestic films in the top ten means 80% of the positions, not necessarily 80% of annual revenue. The 78.7% domestic revenue share applies specifically to National Day. A complete annual domestic market share, current grosses for all ten leaders and a comparable 2025 annual figure have not been established.

The next dated developments are the overseas openings beginning October 15. Their results will provide a separate test of audience demand abroad. At home, the October 11 milestone records substantial ticket sales, while the weaker National Day comparison shows why cumulative revenue alone cannot describe the condition of the whole market.
